Patch 8.3 PTR - Bind on Account Item Level 410 Catch Up Gear
Currently on the PTR, it has been discovered that catch up gear has been added in a manner similar to Argus and Timeless Isle. As you venture into Assaults in Uldum and Vale of Eternal Blossom, you will notice blue gear tokens will drop. Here is what we know so far:

Sorry for the mix-up!

They started with catch up when Sunwell got released. The badge gear was on par with BT gear. Some of the dungeon loot from the new dungeon was better than any raid loot previous to SWP too.

    Well this literally kills professions.

What's the point of adding new 400 ilvl profession gear and then adding free 400 ilvl gear anyway? I swear Blizzard has literally no idea what they're doing 99% of the time. Professions should honestly just be removed from the game at this point and everything should just come from vendors.

There WAS catchup gear in TBC. Isle of Quel'Danas was late into the expansion's run, but did have catchup mechanics and a new dungeon with better gear than previous ones.

Patch 2.4.2 also had a vendor trading Black Temple/Hyjal quality gear for Badge of Justice. Certainly took far more time to acquire than modern forms like this, but you could get those badges from just running heroic dungeons or running raids requiring lesser gear like Kara. The amount of badges you could get per week was effectively capped by heroic dungeon daily resets and raid weekly resets, but the idea of getting strong gear that effectively bypassed previous content still existed.

The gear from queldanas was BT ilvl. It wasn’t a full set mind you but it was def catch up gear. There was also gear from other badge vendors in Shattrath. How do you even think there was no catchup gear in wrath until ICC?
There were badge vendors from day 1 of the expansion, and you got access to the previous tiers badge stuff when the next raid came out and then there was the ToC dungeon.

And another reason not to play 8.3.

Very close to saying goodbye to my retail account. I can't stand this shit anymore.

m0 rewards are being increased, without the difficulty 30% jump?

Catch up gear is reason not to play? But why?

    No sense of progression anymore.

Raiding is unrewarding and serves no purpose other than transmog. It would be at a good place if it dropped the best stuff. I'd go as far as to say even LFR should drop better stuff. Benthic was a horrible mistake alongside the weekly PvP/warfront quests.

Gear is oversaturated, especially thanks to M+ and catch up gear. There's just so much of it everywhere. They're very easy things and far too rewarding. Catch up gear needs to be removed entirely or at least saved for the last patch of an expansion. With M+ being slightly worse than raiding gear with its top item level dropping from M+20s instead of 10s. Those changes would help out a lot.

    isnt ilvl 400 too low?

400 is a little low. Should be 415 imo.

neat.. well.. maybe a little low ilvl.. but its ok from my point of view.. - since we now have an very easy way to level alts..

    Lol...
Usualy when someone gets 120 they cant even que for dungeons, this gear is a gr8 entry ilvl for dungeons and lower mythic+,its fine, also with this patch the world quests also get buffed,so its even better that these 400 pieces boost you faster for the scaling quests

400 seems a bit low for a ”Catch Up” if it doesnt even _catch up_ to low effort geared chars...

    Not impressed!
i call bullsh!t. you dont get that ilvl unless you have farmed THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of pearls. Especially if you are honest about not having a single mythic+ or raiding gear.

400 is fine. It's perfect to get into EP normals. It's perfect for doing M+. You get to skip the heroic dungeon phase as well. It allows you to que for everything before 8.3

Sounds like a catchup mechanic to me. Anyone wanting more, literally doesn't want to put in the work. Putting in the work is half the journey to gaining that experience you need. Unless you watch what you do online first, and can mimic it perfectly right out the gate. I hate spoiling raid encounters by knowing everything the place does before it even hits live servers. HATE IT.

Try to finish HC (or even normal) MGT with new alt that do not have good CC or is shitty geard tank/healer. GL with that.

Yeah i can say that Badges were in some way catch-up but you still had to do HC dungeons and previous raids to get them.
Even with easy Karazhan that dropped many of them (i think it was around 30) cost of many items (weapons) on Isle of Quel'Danas was 150 Badges. So i'd argue if it was that easy and fast to gear up an alt.
Today you get good items on MAIN character and just send them to alts.

Badge-gear came as early as 2.1 which was like 5months into the expansion. But 3-4 people have already said this so I guess you know by now. And that catch-up gear was way better than what we get in 8.3.

Edit: Those who said it started in Sunwell are also wrong, so was I, it came with the launch of TBC actually. But in 2.3 it started to be really good, in 2.4 it was just as good or better than Black Temple gear.

And catch up gear in WotLK also came at launch where you could buy tier gear and gear equal to 10-25 man naxxramas.

I really don't get why there are no weapon tokens for catch up gear. We don't have our artifacts anymore. So why?

How can you catch up without a weapon ???

you probably get a 8.3 quest that gives you 385 or something to start with, then you go m0 with that and hunt for an item. The gear is the easiest to get, rep grind, honor grind and combat ally grind is what messes people up.
  1. khazlol's Avatar
they probably bump m0 ilvl again so it wont be all that difficult to get a okayish weapon
