Patch 8.3 PTR - Corrupted Gear Guide
Corrupted gear is a new system being implemented in Patch 8.3 that effectively replaces titanforging. It is not a permanent system, but will be used through the entirety of patch 8.3.

Basics of the Corruption System
  • Gear from all season 4 sources will have a chance to drop "corrupted", meaning it comes with:
    • A corruption stat, indicated in the item's stats in purple.
      • This adds to your corruption level. As this rises you will start to receive negative affixes that happen to you in combat.
    • An equip bonus that provides a benefit to your character also indicated in a purple equip bonus description on the piece of gear.

Corruption Level
  • A new UI element on your character screen (a N'Zoth eye) will show you the following when moused over:
    • Corruption - Corruption Level before Corruption Resistance.
    • Total Corruption - Corruption Level with Corruption Resistance.
    • Corruption Resistance - How much resistance your cloak/essences reduce from Corruption.
    • Negative Corruption Affixes - Your corruption level debuffs will also show as active here as well.

Negative Corruption Affixes
If your Total Corruption level passes certain thresholds, your character will also gain a negative affix. Each threshold stacks a new negative affix with the previous ones, which creates a risk/reward system for equipping corrupted gear. You will likely want as much bonuses as possible without getting your corruption level too high.

  • 1+ Total Corruption - Grasping Tendrils - Taking damage has a chance to slow your movement speed for 0 sec. The magnitude of the slow increases with further corruption.
  • 20+ Total Corruption - Eye of Corruption - Your spells and abilities have a chance to summon an Eye of Corruption for 8 sec. The Eye inflicts increasing Shadow damage to you every 2 sec while you remain in range. Range and damage increase with further Corruption.
  • 40+ Total Corruption - Grand Delusions - Taking damage has a chance to summon a Thing From Beyond, which pursues you for 8 seconds. Its speed increases with further corruption.
  • 60+ Total Corruption - Cascading Disaster - If you are struck by the Thing From Beyond, you will be immediately afflicted by Grasping Tendrils and Eye of Corruption.
  • 80+ Total Corruption - Inevitable Doom - All damage taken is magnified and healing received is reduced, increasing with further Corruption.

Corruption Resistance
Over the course of the patch you will eventually be able to wear more and more corrupted items without reaching negative Total Corruption thresholds by increasing your Corruption Resistance.

  • Equipping your Ashjra'kamas, Shroud of Resolve legendary cloak will give you corruption resistance. As you increase the rank of your cloak, you will also increase your corruption resistance.
  • The new essences in 8.3 have passive corruption resistance included when equipped.

When an item drops, it will randomly be assigned a bonus effect. That bonus effect can come in three different tiers. The higher the tier, the stronger the effect, but also the more corruption gained.

Cleansing Corrupted Gear
You are able to cleanse a piece of corrupted gear is desired. Cleansing corrupted gear removes all corruption and bonuses, effectively giving you the piece at its base drop without being corrupted. This is a permanent choice.

You unlock this ability by receiving your first corrupted item and getting the quest Curious Corruption. which has you head back to the Chamber of Heart and speak to Wrathion and MOTHER. From this moment on, MOTHER will have an option to purify items when talking to her, which brings up a new UI. Placing a corrupted item into the slot and using 5 Corrupted Mementos will purify the piece.

Seems like a mouthful, though I suppose its more interesting than wf/tf.

Also weapons with interesting effects are a welcome sight.

Need to wait for Raidbots to update I suppose before trying to figure out if my fury warrior would be better off with two of the axes that do armor based damage every 30s, two of the swords that do health based damage or one of each.

What made anyone on their dev team think this was a good idea? What a pile of crap.

Because blizzard has this weird idea that more RNG on top of titanforging rng on top of drop RNG on top of fight rng on top of visions rng (to even use the rng gear) means people will play more.

But I think by the end of BFA they've realized that people quit instead of dealing with slot machines within slot machines.

This sounds very complicated and unnecessary.

    Azerite gear/traits, Necklace level/essence, Corruption gear/resistance.

Over-complicated trash for the sake of unnecessary complexity, with nothing meaningful or interesting.

BFA has the worse gearing system in wow history by a wild margin.

This is reverse titanforging - its more beneficial to stack items with low tier (no titanforging) than tier 3 (titanforged). Blizzard hitting us with the heavy mindgames.

So basically first I have to hope that I get correct piece of gear, then I need to hope it gets corrupted, then I hope for correct corruption and finally I have to hope that I get the tier 3 corruption. When most free to play mobile gacha games have less RNG than a p2p MMO you should realize that something is wrong.

This is the worst system ever introduced to WoW.

Azerite was also not the best one, but this... This is a madness, and absolutely bad, and unnecessary. Titanforging was much more better than this idiot system.

Ahh, the usual "i hate this even tho im fking clueless about it", never dissapoints, just the removal of titanforging is enough for this to be good, no more people running fake ilvl, everyone gets what they deserve and its not as braindead as titanforging, so thats good, the gap between players will be even bigger now tho, something fun to look forward to.

Its really not as much RNG as everyone makes it out to be. For one, it doesn't matter which piece of gear you get it on, as long as its good gear for you, so you don't have to wait for that special belt with the special affix - every piece of gear can have the same affix. Secondly, corrupting is not several rolls, but just one, out of a large pool of affixes. And since corruption is limited by how much resistance you have, and its purgeable, drops with it on are actually relatively common.

Additionally, for the majority of the traits, tier 1 and tier 3 are of equal power for the corruption they cost, which means a tier 1 affix isn't a bad thing, you can gather multiple tier 1s on different pieces of gear and get the exact same effect as you would from one tier 3. This lets you slowly build up your corruption, and also fine-tune it to the amount of resistance you have, and which penalities you are willing to accept. In that sense, a couple tier 1s are actually better, since you can unequip or purge one of them, and still keep 2/3's of the effect, instead of having to purge all of it.

Only much later in the cycle when you have built up ample resistance would you even want plenty tier 3's. And either you are still playing then anyway and collected corruption gear, or you are already done and don't need it anymore (since its the last tier as well).

Its futile to explain them, most of them complained about titanforging removing the bis list, since chasing your bis was impossible and blabla, now its the same, they are gonna complain about corruption being too much rng, never getting the piece they want etc, you know they need their absolute bis gear to clear normal before the patch ends, or even better, the allmighty AOTC!! what a joke.

Depending on what the cap of resistance is, most likely T1 will be the go-to ranks to aim for so you can have more modifiers.

Luckily there are two ways to avoid it. Quit or cleanse it.
