A Note About BlizzCon

A gaming convention is probably the last thing on most people’s minds right now, and that goes for many of us at Blizzard too. As events around the world announce cancellations, postponements, or shifts to an online format in response to COVID-19, we’re seeing questions about our plans for this year’s BlizzCon and we want to provide a quick update.

We love BlizzCon, and we know many of you share that feeling and look forward to it as an opportunity to get away for a while, meet up with friends, and have a good time. As so many of us have been isolated for multiple weeks now, surrounded and in some cases directly impacted by the ongoing pandemic-related challenges around the world, we’re looking forward to the time when we can see one another again in person and have something to celebrate together.

While we’re all hopeful things will look better later in the year, the bottom line is that at this point it’s too early to know whether BlizzCon 2020 will be feasible. The health of our community, employees, and everyone who helps with the show is our top consideration. It might be a few months before we know for certain if or how we’ll proceed, but as soon as we have a meaningful update, we’ll share it.

We do want to mention that prior to the recent events we had been actively working to finalize our plans and in fact are still doing so, despite the workplace changes we’ve now made at Blizzard. That includes considering a range of scenarios and possibilities, not just in terms of the show, but also regarding what the experience would be for you. We know BlizzCon also involves preparation on your part, so we’ll do our best to provide as much clarity as we can, as quickly as we can.

In the meantime, please be good to one another, stay well, and know that we’re holding everyone impacted by COVID-19 in our thoughts.

Fury Warrior, Executive Producer of BlizzCon

    1) it want be totally cancelled it may move to online only

    2) they can't wait till the fall to make a decision. I'd say no later than the end of june to give people and vendors time to adjust plans or make plans if its on. Also the convention center has lead times for cancellations etc..

my feeling is online only is a strong possibility, things will be better but Con is approaching cold/flue season again, and stuffing 35k+ people into one location and tight spaces isn't smart yet.

Just give us Shadowlands as soon as possible.
I would rather they take their time with Shadowlands and get it done right rather than get it out as soon as possible. There are plenty of other things to do in life until Shadowlands arrives. BfA is and has been a total disaster. We need to have a good expansion now again.

How would there be a Cosplay contest? Could people just send pictures?
    That's what Kupocon did

The only way giant conventions or sports events with tens of thousands of visitors will be possible again is once we have antiviral+vaccine for the Coronavirus. I don't see that happening this year sadly.

yeah I've got friends already saying even if it happens they don't want to go cause of it. I'm sure it will sell out but still but i think given safety of things its gonna be online only.

Ham I think. It might be roast beef but because it's close to Easter I'm going to go with ham.

Well depends on when the do the carving Blizzcon normally happens beginning of November so it's possible if they wait to carve until then it will be a turkey since it will be to late for them to carve a pumpkin.

Only sensible choice would be to outright cancel it if you actually care about people. Even if we get over the worst of the current outbreak, it won't be eradicated and most likely not treatable by the end of the year. Until we reach the point of vaccine or a treatment we will keep putting out fires in the form of localized outbreaks that hopefully won't reach the current level again. Having a convention with a lot of people who at the best of times have questionable hygenic standards is a recipe for disaster.

Case in point. I see that logic is not your strong suit.
