Shadowlands Adventures - Blizzard's Official Preview

Prepare to put your tactical skills to the test. In the expansion’s new Adventures feature, you’ll send your allies into the Shadowlands to tackle unique challenges for your chosen Covenant. You’ll need to be strategic about how you take on these combat puzzles, including who you’ll send to face them and how you’ll use their skills to claim victory.

You’ll also be able to check in on and continue your Adventures offline with the WoW Companion App.

A New Way to Adventure

Once you’ve joined your chosen Covenant, you’ll be able to begin undertaking Adventures from the dedicated table within your Sanctum. Through the interface, you’ll be able to view available Adventures, the associated rewards, the cost to undertake them, the state of your units, and how challenging the enemies are within that Adventure. You’ll want to choose a solid mix from your Adventurers, Soulbinds, and troops to create a party of up to 5 units to deal with the various threats.

With the introduction of Soulbinds in Shadowlands, we wanted to find a compelling way to bring their individual personality traits into as many aspects of the game as possible, including Adventures. Similar to previous high-profile personalities in past expansions’ Missions, Soulbinds will be able to lead the charge while expressing their own motivations and goals through the Adventures system.

Making Your Play

When it’s time to prepare for battle, positioning matters. You’ll need to use strategy in how you place your Adventurers to take on the enemies they’ll engage with and counter their abilities. For example, you may want to make sure your toughest allies are placed in the front of the formation, with more fragile allies placed toward the back so damage to them is minimized and they can use their ranged abilities.

At the completion of an Adventure, you’ll be able to see the results through a replay of the battle. You’ll want to pay close attention to which units performed well, which you may want to reposition, or which you might want to exclude in future similar fights to make the most of them in your next encounters.

To the victor goes the spoils! Should your troops defeat the encounter, you’ll collect your earned rewards including pets, mounts, gold, Anima, and more.

Recruiting New Allies

Each Covenant provides a variety of 15 unique allies, including the Soulbinds that you’ll meet, 6 Adventurers that you’ll recruit through Renown, and an additional 6 who can be rescued from within Torghast, Tower of the Damned. Four universal Adventurers can also be recruited by any Covenant from within Torghast, bringing your potential allies to 19.

As your allies progress through the various challenges that Adventures present, they’ll grow stronger, allowing them to take on more challenging Adventures for even better rewards.

Check back on the official site in the future to learn more about the updated WoW Companion App.

good to see they did something with the table/mission/follower system and not just copy&paste it from legion like they did in BfA

I wish they would just sunset these mission tables. Do people actually enjoy these?

This doesn't look interesting to me at all. But, for those who find fun in this kind of thing, you do you!

I'd do the Legion ones pretty frequently with the mobile app during office downtime aka poop o'clock

Would be nice if you could with a toggle accompany your followers to increase rewards and have a feeling your actually doing things yourself through the mission tables

Why do they keep forcing this into the game? Do people actually like this? Does it serve any purpose?

This LOOKS interesting, but will end up a complete joke because they obviously can't make this strategically deep or challenging in any way. It'll be solved immediately, possibly even addon-optimized. Just another chore instead of an actual feature.

Which makes you wonder... why do they keep persisting with this extra mission minigame thing that people have consistently failed to enjoy?

An incredibly boring, barely interactive way to "adventure"!

"Totally not like missions" btw lol

It's literally just Missions but with some extra sugar in it.

You don’t have to use it if you don’t want to. It’s not a requirement. You mmo-champ whiners do make me laugh.

sorry to break it to you, but nothing changed. the system is exactly the same.

set up units on your grid, click go, wait x time then receive bacon and skip the animation, because its pointless.

any strategic choice can be easily made, and should be made by, an addon.

i expected to see some kind of mini-game with the units actually fighting each other, but its just deterministic, the only new variable is positioning. but you can just consider it a bonus that reads "up to x units per party will receive this bonus. Reduce damage by %" x being the available backslots.

imho the system is actually worse than the current one, in the current system epic units can be enough to do any mission, and its pretty easy to level them to that point. on the new system you have to level for FAR longer until your chars can be good enough, and you have way too many heroes. its not as bad as the original table system in that respect, but it does mean that if you have one good team, your table gets flooded with hard mission your shit teams cant take on.

Well I just asked if this is a popular system or not and wether its highly liked by the playerbase. Since you are incapable of answering the questions I asked, I can atleast comfort myself knowing I somehow made you laugh by asking these questions.

And generally speaking - you dont have to do anything in the game, you dont even neeeed to play the game, but it certainly helps to do most if you want to progress your character(s).

Firstly, the only way to develop these kinds of missions in a way that an add-on couldn't be made for it would be to make everything totally random, which would make no sense. This isn't meant to be ultra complicated, compelling gameplay, but rather, more of something that connects your character more to the world he's in. You're a leader/commander that is commanding troops to take on smaller tasks, like any leader/commander would.

Also, they keep making them because, there are plenty of people who do enjoy them. Blizzard also has plenty of data to show where engagement is, so I doubt they are making a feature for the 4th time if literally no one is enjoying it. As someone who does enjoy these kinds of features, I really like the look of this.

It lets them put in the bare minimum of design effort; no voice acting, very little art needed, less testing needed to catch all the bugs.

All they need to do to "tell our followers' stories" is a bit of quest text and picking some names for the zones our followers are supposed to have gone to, and the enemies they're supposed to have fought.
