Legendary Crafting Guide
Characters are able to craft their own legendaries upon reaching level 60. Here is a simple guide to how the process works.

Unlocking the Runecarver
  • Upon reaching level 60, you will be directed by Bolvar to find a way to unlock Torghast by talking to Ve'nari in the Maw and completing the introductory quest inside Torghast to rescue Baine. Upon killing the boss of wing 6 inside the introduction, a quest item will drop that you bring back to Ve'nari after bringing Baine back to Oribos.
  • This quest item leads you back into a room inside the lobby of Torghast, where you will be directed by the Runecarver there to obtain a memory from a boss just outside Ve'nari's refuge in the Maw. Upon bringing it back you will then have to do a follow up quest to break his chains by purchasing an item from Ve'nari and killing mobs for quest items.
  • This allows you to then collect Soul Ash from Torghast runs. Bring 1250 to the Runecarver to be able to craft your legendaries.
  • You must unlock the Runecarver up to the point of collecting 1250 Soul Ash to be able to loot memories.

Obtaining Soul Ash
  • Torghast is your primary method of obtaining Soul Ash.
  • Torghast is a repeatable rogue-like dungeon where you climb 6 floors and fight a boss. Each time you complete a layer, you will be able to choose a harder layer until you reach layer 8. (Layers 1-6 are available now. 7 and 8 release next week.)
  • There are two wings per week to que for and they rotate every week.
  • Completing a layer for the first time each week will reward you with all the Soul Ash that would be earned from layers below it.
  • In order to maximize the amount of Soul Ash you can get, you must complete the highest floor possible in each wing once a week.
  • There will be 2 different wings open each week. You can only receive Soul Ash from each layer once per week.
  • The max amount of Soul Ash you can earn in a week once all layers are open is 1140 (570 per wing)
  • Soul Ash Amounts Per Layer
    • Layer 1 - 120
    • Layer 2 - 100
    • Layer 3 - 85
    • Layer 4 - 70
    • Layer 5 - 60
    • Layer 6 - 50
    • Layer 7 - 45
    • Layer 8 - 40
  • You can also obtain Soul Ash periodically by completing challenging missions at your Adventure Table.
  • Bolvar also offers a series of quests that are time-gated, each rewarding Soul Ash.

Obtaining Memories
  • Memories are the recipes that you must bring to the Runecarver to unlock different legendary powers.
  • Each legendary has a specific drop location. Once you loot the item, you can bring it to the Runecarver's room and right click it to permanently earn the ability to craft it.
  • These are account wide.
  • Refer to the powers tab on your Adventure Guide in order to find out where each of your legendary Memories drop.

Crafting your Legendary
  • There are a few items you need to bring to the Runecarver to craft your legendary:
    • The legendary memory power must be unlocked. Each legendary power has 2 different gear slots available to craft in.
    • A base item for the slot that you wish to craft the power in.
      • These are purchased on the auction house or crafted by crafters.
    • Two Missives with the stats you desire on your legendary piece.
      • Missives are purchased on the auction house or crafted by scribes.
      • There is one for each secondary stat. You must have 2 different stats when crafting your legendary.
    • The necessary amount of Soul Ash

Upgrading Your Legendaries
  • Legendaries can be upgraded 3 times for a total of 4 ranks.
    • Rank 1 - ILvl 190
    • Rank 2 - ILvl 210
    • Rank 3 - ILvl 225
    • Rank 4 - ILvl 235
  • You do not use any more soul ash crafting a rank 1 and upgrading it than you do crafting a rank 4 right away. The only addition is the gold cost associated with crafting the higher item level base piece.
  • To upgrade a legendary, you need:
    • Your current rank legendary
    • The appropriate base item for the new rank
    • Soul Ash

If I buy a rank 4 base item and craft for 5150 ashes then no upgrade for the item?

Can I exchange the armor slot when upgrading a legendary item? For example, let’s say that I crafted rank 1 legendary pants, and I have enough Soul Ash to upgrade to Rank 2, but I want to switch to boots. Would that be posible, or would I need to remake the legendary from scratch?

You can always switch to another legendary when you want to, you just need the crafted base item. If you want the rank 2 version, get your hands on the rank 2 version (ilvl 210). It'll cost you some initially, like when you crafted your first one. But no you can't just switch over from one slot to another without getting the base item.

Can you skip ranks when upgrading to a higher tier?

So I'm assuming you can only equip one of these right?

Is anyone else already feeling disillusioned with max level? I don't want to manage 3-4 different systems, flight-pathing every daily/world quest, run torghast 10 times a week for soul ash or whatever that system is... I can't be the only one who's still feeling fatigue from those similar systems in BfA?

Why you want run throghast 10 times a week? Higher floor include lower flooor ash so theres no need to go from 1 to max. So basically at this point you need to run Thorgast only twice a week.

Torghast has high requirements? I run it for my weekly quest and to get enough ash to craft my legendary, after that it become optional until they release the legendary upgrades. That is 1-3 runs at most as things stand right now and 1 run minimum which takes most players less time then a heroic dungeon. Mine take longer simply because I'm a scrub so I need all the anima perks I can get.

Good evening all! I would like to know if we can socket legendaries that are in a scockatable slot and if we lose the socket when we upgrade the Legendary item. Thank you in advance!

so is there any reason to rank up the legendary crafting recipes?

The base item level of legendaries is 190, not 175.

you are not counting initial 6 runs to unlock L6 for example - because god forbid we cant just jump from L3 to L6 .

i just did the L4-L6 push - on L6 never dropped below 90% of health - so what i had to waste additional 1,5 hour to clear 4 and 5 ><

"Up to the point" - to the point when the quest becomes available? Because I'm pretty sure I've looted some memories before gathering ash.

You can start looting Memories and collecting Soul Ash before you've even met the Runecarver.

I haven't rescued Baine yet, but I got a memory drop off the world boss this week and I got soul ash for doing another layer 1 Torgast.

Especially the lower tier white items have been plunging in price lately, so I'm not sure if there's a strong reason to get into crafting them. Maybe at some point there will be a BOP tier but I doubt it.

Is there any way to change stats I accidentally chose my worst stat for one on my gloves if there is not I’m just going to start over even though I already got it to 210 just feels really bad

I'll wait until the first patch or two when Blizzard puts in the catch-up mechanism as they always do. BfA was enough for me with leveling the neck, then doing whatever was necessary to obtain the essences. I am just hoping I don't get bored of running through Torghast. I could care less for the Maw. I am only completing it to advance the story and whatever rep grind is available through it.

There will be no catch up mechanic for soul ash. There will never need to be it takes 1 week each week to upgrade.

Correct, for now. The max level of a legendary is 235. If you craft a 235 for 5150 soul ash, you're done with that legendary for this tier/patch/whatever.

No. You need to upgrade through each rank.

Correct, for now. Only one legendary can be worn at a time, but you can have more than one in your bags.

The base item level is 175 in the game files. The entire legendary system uses the item upgrade system that's also responsible for scaling quest rewards and BoEs to level and rare/epic/socket/stat procs. It doesn't matter if the item is 190, 210, 225, 235, or turned into a legendary, it's the same exact base 175 item just with different upgrade IDs in the full item link. This is also why the <Made by Leetcrafter> shows up on legendaries, because you still have the same item.
