As someone who is out of the loop, explain to me if you would please... why would anyone make an RTS game right now? Isn't that a lot of risk, given I thought the RTS genre was kind of dead overall, most of the games that have RTS like elements having more than just that, like the Total War series and its campaign map?

Studio is made up by a lot of former SC2 personell, as Blizzard axed SC2 development and does not want to develop a new RTS game, they made their own studio, so people on board there *really* want to make an RTS game.

Who knows, genres stay dead unless someone is willing to develop new games for them, maybe something good will come out of it, maybe not.

    For anyone curious:
James Anhalt is also pretty much a Blizzard veteran, who has at least worked since Warcraft 3 there.

    Brain drain is real.

IDK, I've seen a lot of renewed interest in RTS's lately.

I mean, it's risky yeah, but if you are the one that brings RTS back you are in for big bucks.
Genres and interests goes up and down like everything in life. The right RTS will bring back RTS.

I was raised with RTS games, but i don't think they will make come back. Maybe AoE4 will change it.

I'm always up for a good RTS so good luck to them. Great games are made with much less money so let's see it.

I wonder how much of this donated money will find its way into the CEO's pockets.

This has to be one of the nastiest posts I've seen that didn't include cursing. Seriously, people who donate to a charity are whales?

They are actually doing something noble while you are being selfish. Not something to be proud of.

In a LOT of cases yes.
MSF is one of the few actually reliable charities out there, but a vast majority of them are money making schemes.

Still,if you want to donate, you should NEVER,and I want to emphasise the NEVER,donate on behalf of another company like Blizzard. It's a way for them to get tax cuts for charity without actually spending their own money. I don't actually know for a fact that this is the way blizzard is operating this donation drive, but it doesn't hurt to be wary

tl:dr you spend money and don't get tax cuts, they don't spend money and still get tax cuts

RTS is anything but dead. Problem is, there aren't any good recent games. Just this past weekend there was a community organized AoE2 tournament on twitch which easily broke over 60k views during the final. Certainly more than WoW can claim for its tournaments outside of race to world first.

True. RTS are still alive and kicking. The reason why you don't see new ones is because they're not as good for making money as other genres (and attempts to force monetisation into a RTS have all crashed and burned pretty hard)

Awesome! Hopefully a good RTS game comes out of it. Big fan of the genre. Sucks that Blizzard decided to pull the plug on SC2.

So its noble to introduce MTX into a paid and subscription game? I fail to see the logic here.

No, post like these that deny the truth need to be stop. Non-profit means that you make sure you spread the pot among everyone so there's no 'profit' left over. It's funny the first people non-profits do is pay themselves before they donate the rest of their 'earnings'.

Don't get it twisted. Imagine a tax cut for donation, thus making your income bigger to offset any 'net profit' as a result.

if you mean the ceo of doctors without borders I'm fairly certain that the income for the head of all charities is readily available (and sickening)

Horror was also kind of a dead genre (save for action-horror titles like Dead Space and Resident Evil 4-5) until the indie scene revived it, especially games like Amnesia : the Dark Descent, and it was big enough to make Resident Evil go back to a more horror-focused approached. The popularity of titles like the Command and Conquer/Age of Empires remasters shows that there are enough people who like RTS for them to be catered to, especially by a smaller studio that won't need millions upon millions of sales to be profitable unlike Blizzard.

You do know that people that work for non-profits aren't all doing it for charity right? The charity hires it's employees/CEO's and they demand a certain pay to work there. Unless you want charities to use slave labor and underpaid leadership? If the CEO can be paid 400k elsewhere for the work that they do, then the charity needs to fork up 400k to get him to work there. The real world isn't all fuzzies and rainbows where people take a 75% pay cut to work for charity.
