Omar Gonzalez Leaves Blizzard and Joins Dreamhaven
Omar Gonzalez, one of the senior software engineers that worked on the early prototype of Classic WoW has left Activision Blizzard and joined Secret Door, one of the studios owned by Dreamhaven, Mike Morhaime's new gaming company.

This news comes from Kevin Jordan, one of the original designers for World of Warcraft, which replied to a community question: Where is Omar?

Omar Gonzalez started working on World of Warcraft in 2003 and worked his way up to become Principal Software Engineer at Blizzard Entertainment. In an interview with xDrale, translated by Wowhead, this is what Game Director Ion Hazzikostas said about Omar:
One of them, an engineer named Omar Gonzalez, who is on the Classic team, tried the method of taking the modern client, the modern server and teaching it to interpret the old 1.12 classic data. He kind of locked himself away for a few weeks, and came out with something that was a prototype--it was very rough, contained tons of bugs, the world wasn't fully rendered, but it was the original classic world, pre-Cataclysm. It had the original skills and talents, and we knew there's was a ton of work to do, but we felt like we realized for the first time, "we can do this."

Hey, they're gonna leave Blizz too
    Another one leaves Blizzard

How do you think they're going to make games
    Without devs, when they're gone
They took us for everything that we had
And made devs quit on their own
Are you happy, are you satisfied?
How long til all the talent leave?
Out of the doorway the game's R.I.P.

Yes, WoW has changed over the years. There's almost no long-running games out there which haven't changed and remained popular. They do exist of course, but most games released in the early-mid 2000's have long since died.

The fact that the community still gets divided about issues shows that there's still passion for the game, and that new changes still make people think "Do I like what this change does?" and want to discuss it.

People move onto new jobs all the time, even in huge companies, and even when they're at the top of their respective ladder. Reasons range from the really bad stuff like harassment or policy changes which might really hurt them, right through to more positive things like simply looking for something different.

Burnout is a real thing. Most developers, myself included, either take time off, fight through it, or we find opportunities elsewhere. That could mean leaving the company and going elsewhere, or it could mean discussing with management about the possibility of moving to a new project.

Blizzard has been going for long enough that other developers will have gained years of experience, and will step into the position of the seniors when they move on.

That's not to say Blizzard are perfect, but we shouldn't assume a senior leaving the company is because of 'omg Activision policies'.

As an FYI this is important and you can stop being like that.

There's approximately like, 2 actual live humans working at Blizzard that are responsible for the games you play. That's it. That's all that's left. Everyone else has left for other companies, yes, but notable have left for other companies started by the OG Blizzard heads.

Working on projects that bring in revenue = wasting time.

    Yeah, that's how it works.

im no expert, but as far as i understand its just how all the íntellectual properties rules work. if youre too lenient, you risk to lose the ownership your brand.

Some more creative and maybe more adventurous developers probably get tired of it. Dreamhaven is likely quite enticing, because of it. A change of scenery. A fresh start. With familiar people.
Blizzard is kinda famous for paying extremely bad for the area they are in compared to the rest of the industry. Apparently people only get by by either being the rockstars at the top, massively downsizing their own life-style to the point of living on campus or be among the few lucky ones that know how to game Blizzard's incentive/bonus systems. Especially during the pandemic many people just straight up left for other companies where the conditions were more stable, probably alot of the second crowd, since homeoffice only works if you actually have a home to work from (and live).

Any other project would have brought in more money. Classic is a waste of time.

He hardly jumped a sinking ship. Activision Blizzard makes shit tons of money. His salary is likely the same either way.

Sometimes people move companies for reasons other than just how customers feel about a company. Crazy I know.

Considering the effort being mostly work for porting? I doubt that. Classic didn't take millions of man-hours of dev work, like an actual new project would.

Considering Blizzard has gone on record multiple times to state that Classic vastly surpassed their expectations and now are about to release what is essentially its sequel, you're just plain wrong.

Disregarding that Classic has its own team and thus doesn't take away any resources from other projects, it doesn't stop Blizzard in the least from working on those projects which are supposed to be far more sucessful than Classic.

Nah dude, he saw the monetization Blizzard was adding to Classic and was so utterly disgusted that he jumped ship as soon as possible. You see, companies making products for money is a cardinal sin. And if you do anything other than develop games in your basement with a skeleton crew of 5 or less developers who are paid in fast food coupon specifically for Real Gamers™* then you don't deserve to be acknowledged by this community.

"Classic has its own development team" brought to you by the longest introductory tier content drought since the game was released.

Blaming ANY content drought on classic is silly. What was the excuse for 14 months of SoO just to go straight into WoD?

Blizzard is perfectly capable of wasting their own time without any other project

It's more likely that they were working up to the very last minute in shadowlands and weren't able to work ahead for 9.1 at all

That's the fault of the Team working on Retail, not Classic.
Unless you have any source that can back up the claim that Classic is the reason why there's massive content drought on Retail, that's just a baseless claim.

The job listings for Retail and Classic are even separate.
