World of Warcraft Bot Ban Wave - May 25th, 2021
A ban wave has went out on May 25th, targeting popular bots such as Wowadvanced and Minibot. According to a reddit post, the software was detected a few weeks prior to the ban wave, but the owners did not let the community know about this.

Due to the Policy Update for Input Broadcasting that made all command mirroring against the EULA three weeks ago, it looks like Blizzard can now ban botters on a larger scale much more easily.

iMorph and jMorph Suspensions
Players using iMorph and jMorph received 180-day bans, since software that changes the client-side character model is not allowed. Two years ago Blizzard reverted some of the suspensions, warning that future use of such software would result in increased penalties.

ConsolePort Suspensions - Some Bans Overturned
Players using ConsolePort have also received suspensions, most likely due to a false positive caused by WoWmapper, a tool that works with ConsolePort to bring controller functionality to World of Warcraft.

Many players have already been unbanned, while some of them are still waiting for an update on their appeals. Munk, the author of ConsolePort, has shared the following message in the ConsolePort discord server:

Either way, this project is backed and acknowledged by Blizzard due to its impact on accessibility to otherwise unable players. I'm sure once they realize their mistake, this will all be reverted.

I do want to mention I'm not just speculating here and will let you know once I get the word back from Blizzard on what happened here.

It's for moments such as these that I wish we had an upvote function.

Gotta get around to watching it again...

Those types of addons are banned because they don't want anyone messing with the textures in the game.

Your example is an innocent one, but there are far more malicious uses for manipulating textures.

and here I was a week ago trying to find a working version of tmorph so I could get the old school vanilla rogue poison animations back.

Except PvPers. Changing character models and textures can have huge advantages in PvP. There are lesser advantages in PvM, but it's much less of a big deal. So yes, while most players would use it for something harmless, some people don't and Blizzard can't manually check every instance to see why someone is using it. So unfortunately, it has to just be outlawed completely.

Really wish Blizzard would take the same stance as Square with FFXIV with texture Mods.

haven't heard of this what is their stance on texture mods, also would this sort of thing be a perma or temp ban with blizz,? i dont understand what constitutes as a 3 day ban a 1 month ban or a perma ban from them, they seem to be all over the place with this

Last ban wave that got sent out for texture modding, that I remember, was a 6 month ban that Blizzard eventually overturned. Square is, seemingly, completely fine with it as long as you don't advertise that you are doing it.

they ban morphing for 6 months but literally buying gold in classic is a 2 day ban lol!!

The ConsolePort bans are a perfect example of the issue with Blizz's mass ban setup. With ConsolePort, we have a tool that was infinitely useful to those who might have issues sitting at a keyboard for long periods of time, something you'd think Blizz would be happy to have a tool for. Munk certainly does, mentioning how the project has the backing of Blizz. Yet rather than work with the author to ensure ConsolePort isn't caught in this web or bring something similar into WoW, they instead just throw out a blanket ban without seemingly looking at the issue.

Some people will probably get those overturned, but I imagine that the overturning is much like everything else with Blizz CS...it depends on what rep you get and how much they care to help. There's probably a decent set of people who hadn't seen the new policy, not all WoW players frequent news sites and the ToS can be a monster to see updates to. Plenty more may be taking time off from the game starting in the last week or two, not even realizing that they are caught up in this ban wave. Even trying to look at reverting it might be tricky if Blizz hasn't noted the specific app which seems likely.

It just begs the question: how many people are now banned today for using an approved addon to help with various disabilities that will never get proper assistance from Blizz on this issue?

It's not about "being hurt". It's about being a fucking adult. You agree to the TOS, you deal with it when you are caught violating it...

Don't come crying you can't play naked Jaina, it's kinda pathetic.

And why's that? It's client side, it provides no benefit beyond visuals for me. That's completely stupid.

For example I could use it to change the texture so instead of stealthed characters being invisible they turn bright fucking red and therefore giving me an advantage against stealthed and invisible players

COPIUM it doesn’t harm anyone. Let me placate my dopamine addiction by having mount and transmog visuals that I didn’t earn but are only visible on my screen.

It’s a good thing they banned people using it. It forces people to have done the content or go out to do content in w/e form to get things for the account rather than just flipping a switch and have things for free.

Correct me if I'm wrong but haven't client side model changes always been not allowed? If that's the case how is retail dead now?
