Blizzard has updated the forum post "Free Character Transfers" from earlier this month, announcing that the free service will be closed on Tuesday, June 15 at 11:00 PT (14:00 ET, 20:00 CEST).

We’ve opened the Free Character Transfer service to players on some realms in this region. Free Character Transfers are now available:

From - To - Faction Restriction - NA Realms
  • Faerlina - Incendius - Available to all characters
  • Faerlina - Skeram - Available to all characters
  • Mankrik - Westfall - Horde only
  • Mankrik - Windseeker - Horde only
  • Whitemane - Anathema - Horde only
  • Whitemane - Thunderfury - Horde only

From - To - Faction Restriction - EU Realms
  • Gehennas - Stonespine - Horde only
  • Gehennas - Ten Storms - Horde only
  • Pyrewood Village - Nethergarde Keep - Alliance only
  • Firemaw - Bloodfang - Horde only

Please note:
  • You cannot transfer a character who
    • is the leader of a guild.
    • has items up for auction.
    • has in-game mail messages.
  • You may have to change the character’s name after the transfer.
  • You cannot transfer a character to a PvP realm where you already have a character of the opposite faction.
  • The transfer of a character is a final decision once initiated, and cannot be undone. Blizzard Customer Service cannot adjust or reverse the character transfer process.

During times when servers are very busy, free character transfers can take up to several hours.

As always, we will monitor the number of characters moved and the populations on the realms above and close free transfers if necessary. We encourage players who wish to move to do so as soon as possible, as this service may be closed without notice.

We’ll update this thread with any planned changes or closures as soon as they are finalized.

    imo this shouldn't be a thing yet or even atall, i remember the only way off a realm was to pay for it

    Just because something was one way before doesn't mean it has to be the same way now.

    Without queues, I doubt people are going to transfer. They're going to have to remove layers to queue up players before they move again.

    Free Character migration has existed since the beginning. They started charging for it when people wanted to stack realms.

    They were pretty common in Vanilla (specific servers and specific factions to other specific servers). They started slowing it down in BC a bit because they didn't need to balance the realms as much.

    Starting in Wrath (maybe late in BC), they realized they could start charging for it. That's what you remember.

    Oh, I just created some characters on Faerlina and Whitemane, even boosted one.
    Why aren't character creation closed if they are offering transfers? This makes no sense to me.
