"Closest to death" encounter: Fought 3 dragons at once while being besieged by a giant + 2 mammoths. Giant Killed a dragon while the mammoths were killed by aerial assaults from two dragons. Giant hit me once, I killed him. Had to slay the other two dragons with only 2 Normal Healing potions (Or whatever the 50 hp point ones are.) The fight ended with me on 13 hp out of 270 with no magicka left for fast healing nor potions. Also, I had no dragonrend at this point, as I was only level 19 and had not gotten that far into the major story line. ;-;

They aren't? Only the three recent games you start out as a prisoner I think. I think the two first games are quite vague about who you are, and why you are helping the Empire (Even more so than usual xD). Not 100% sure though.

Remember doing this gamestyle with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (You die you lose) and Pokemon (Limited to 6 Pokemon, you catch whatever you encounter first unless it's identical, if it faints you release it, if your whole team faints you lose). Good to see this thing continuing with Skyrim. Fits perfectly!
