    How will quests work?

How do they plan to do quests in this game? Will it be like your average MMO where you're told to go collect assorted animal parts, kill specific NPCs, collect metal scrap? Or are they going to try something completely different? Just curious, even if they did traditional MMO quests it wouldn't bother me, as long the end game, combat, and PVP is great.

the way i think it will be is sort of like rifts dynamic events where if your in a certain range of an event in a zone it will come up with objectives that you need to do to complete that event

is the best example of what i mean on how it could work except instead of rifts you open there will just be mobs that are out there

again just an example of how questing could work in guild wars2

You will only see quests which most MMO gamers are used to (accepting quests from NPCs) in your personal story which also changes in terms of the decisions you make throughout the game. Anything else will happen through dynamic events which you will actually trip over everywhere you go. On your map you will be able to see where stuff is happening but you can also talk to scout NPCs (if you like straight up directions) who will tell you where stuff is happening in the world and where you can go.

One of the best if not the best explanation of the game mechanics etc. is the developers interview video, which is over an hour long, but really worth watching if you are interested in GW2 and want overall information about it.

Guild Wars 2 got no quests.

There are no NPCs with exclamation (!) marks over them, you will basically walk around in the world, and these dynamic events appears. Dynamic events overwrite the whole quest system, so dynamic events will be your way of leveling in PvE content.

There are a lot of dynamic events, for example, you walk along the road, and you will see bandits attack this farmers field, destroying the melons or whatever he is grows. The farmer, or any other NPC, will shout at you, with real recorded voice acting that ''We need your help! The bandits are destroying my field! Please, help me!'' and the NPC will point at which direction the farm is at, so these ''quest givers'' will run up to you and seek your help.

Another kind of event is that centaur attack that's famous to explain. Basically, you will see a army of centaurs marching in the direction of a village, when they reach the village they will start to plunder, killing, setting it aflame and whatnot, NPCs will of course run up to you and scream for help. If you succeed in defending the town, the dynamic event will branch out, as in, small other dynamic events will appear around the map. For instance, a caravan will be escorted from the main city, to the village, in this caravan there's weapons, tools to build catapults and such things, if you succeed in escort the caravan, the village will be stronger, and there's so much more dynamic events going on because of that 1 big event started.

If you now fail to defend the village in the first place, the centaurs will hold it, for 10 minutes, 1 day, 3 months, until the players do something about it, and they will also start taking other villages nearby, and such.

Personal story says hi.... and npc's involving the personal story have starbursts over their heads...

However!! Everything else you said (other then no quests period) is 100% correct, and also the "quests" are ONLY for personal story, you wont find them anywhere else.

They're trying something different, but not completely different... As it's still a massive; the same genre.

For example, in general, but not specific, there are collect animal parts, kill specific NPCs and collect scrap quests... They're wrapped up in 'Dynamic Events', which is a flowery way of saying, quest hubs that change... It's just another way to tackle the 'life long' massive genre drawbacks of 'my actions don't affect the world' and what not.

There will still be plenty of repetitive, redundant 'quests' (again, it's a massive), but we can hope it will be presented in an interesting way.

The potential drawbacks, however, are just as real. If you're 'forced' to wander around, to find something to do, this is going to negatively impact a lot of players... Other massives have quest hubs, and breadcrumbs, and a sense of order, for reasons (namely, the evolution of the genre, and story-telling)... Going a different route could alienate many, and we'll see how things go (hopefully) next year.

I have a quick question then. How will one transition from one zone to the other? If there are no "quests" that say.. ok go to this next town" will you basically be stuck in a zone until you realize that you could have gone to another zone 10 lvls ago? I can understand if the personal quest has you going to different places, but what if someone doesn't want to do anything with the personal quest?

It just seems a little bit.. cheap.. to run around and help out one zone and then decide you want to leave and go help out another zone just by the sheer will of wanting to go somewhere else. Not like you will have found everything in the zone you just left.

Magnets are rocks that have been in the ground for so long that they still have some gravity in them. Duh.

There are 2 options for this kind of thing.

1, for players that wants to explore without help.

2, for players that wants to explore but with a guide.

Basically, you run around in the world, exploring, and dynamic events will appear, you don't have to run around the same zone, you just keep explore, run in to different zones, and such, dynamic events might even take you to another zone.

The other one is that there is 'scouts' located at posts, they will guide you where you could go next, mark your map for dynamic events, and where you could go next.

So it's up to the player, do they want to get guided? Or just explore by themself. Or you can do your personal story, it will take you to 80 as well.

Is PvE not what you like? You can level with PvP as well, from level 1, you will get all the skills, weapons, armor unlocked, in PvP battles, and this is really balanced. Every player joining a PvP battle will be balanced to max level so there is no worries of being lower level, this is all just about skills. However, when you have done your PvP, you will be back to where you are in your PvE content. Weapon, skill, armor, level unlocks are just for PvP to make it balanced.

ArenaNet sure thinks a lot of the players.

first of all, dynamic events aren't called dynamic for no reason. No quest in other mmos scaled like they do in GW2.
1.) DEs scale, depending on the number of players in an area. You can do it with your friends or with anyone around and the game will recognize and keeps it challenging. So players can't go rushing through in easy mode, the experience only gets more epic if you play with other people.
2.) DEs chain in several ways. No quest did this before. If you succeed in defending a village from centaurs, you will get a follow up DE in which you will have to take the fight to the enemy base. This isn't possible otherwise. BUT if you fail, the centaurs burn down the village and you won't be able to buy stuff in this village any more. AND there are follow up DEs for both cases. So one leads to another. You don't have to be there... its like a living breathing world. It happens if you're there or not, but you can change the outcome.
If this isn't something new, I don't know what is...

I think we don't know yet, but I guess you will get Story-orders that lead you in different areas. Colin told us an example: While a story-mission sends you to a bandit camp to investigate whats going on you may stumble over some DEs that are happening (or not) in this area. So it feels very natural and ties in together. Story + DEs.

I think this system is superior than working off your questlog. It's not very motivating to look for the question marks on your map and go there while not remembering why you go there. How often did it feel like doing work...?! Now in GW2 you stumble upon a little village and suddenly you see an army of centaurs marching toward the village. Suddenly they attack the village and houses are burning. You didn't even talk to any npc. A villager runs towards you and begs for help. Damn, thats what I call epic. And you know, if you don't help him the village will burn down and the centaurs take it as their new base. And you can guess, that the centaurs will take over other villages afterwards.

exactly, but this is often misunderstood:
-) scouts don't show you dynamic events on the map
-) they unfog the area for a moment and draw in some little hearts - those are actually people you can help out (very vanilla mmo questlike)
-) those hearts are located in areas where SOME dynamic events might occur. There are a lot of other events around the map, so to find all of them, you will have to explore the zone.

example: there is a heart located on a small farm - it stands for the farmer there. You go there and talk to him, he asks you if you can water the plants and feed the cows. When you help him, this heart on the map gets slowly filled. Suddenly bandits attack the farm and you can help the farmer (without talking to him) to defend his farm. I think (not sure) this action fills the heart too (in this case), so its really your decision how you will fill those few hearts on the map.

Please do not forget about the Scouts that tell you were you can go if your looking for work. They won't show you dynamic events but they will show you spots where you can do work. Along the way you will more then likely run into numerous amounts of dynamic events.

  18. #18
The personal story is for those that want a guided experience. Those that want more of a "sandbox" or explorers experience they have the dynamic events for you. You just go in any direction and start playing.

  19. #19
There aren't "quests" unless you're progressing your personal story. Everything else is done in the way of dynamic events and as you approach an area an event will pop up that needs your attention.

Most demo videos show scouts, they're also on wiki in detail, devs have also mention them everytime they are showing off the game...
