    The Great Debate: Y = Yes or Y = Why?

    I've always wondered.

    Y = Yes
    OR
    Y = Why

    Discuss...

    Yes = Yes and Why = Why, 'text' shorthand makes anyone that uses it look completely moronic.

    Y = Y. Why = Why. Yes = Yes.

    Why anyone feels the need to shorten three letter words in the first place is beyond me.

    How about just typing two more letters and skipping the ambiguity?

    Y(es) and (wh)Y are both really, really lazy and just look sloppy in most settings (yes, even texts). However, if two more keypresses are really too much, there's always the amazing third grade power of context clues.

    Just bcs u say so? Lol!

    If youre asking y as in "y did you do that?" kind of thing. Then y = why. I have never seen someone use Y for yes.

    On a side note, dont be lazy enough to not type out two extra letters.

    Is this really a "debate"? I don't think I've ever once witnessed two people debating whether the letter "Y" means "Yes" or "Why"... But to answer your question: both, it just depends on the context.

    I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

    I've used both depending on how little time I have to type say midfight and if the person would understand either.
    Depends if the question being asked is a yes/no question. Also i don't think text shorthand makes someone look less intelligent, it depends on where they are using it.
    Using text shorthand whilst trying to get a point across on a forum = bad
    Using text shorthand whilst relaxing with your friends online = fine
    I find words look a little sillier and happier in shorthand, so it helps to convey the fact that you are happy and at ease with people in guild chat, that way you don't have to overload sentences with smilys or by putting "lol" on the end of everything.

    Next we should debate smilies vs smilys :P

    Abbreviating 3 letter words just makes you look like an idiot. If you're old enough to know how to spell/type/text, you're old enough to know how to add another 2 letters. That fact that people use "y", "u", etc. is a mockery of the English language.

    y=yes

    those that use Y for why are just dumb <.<

    Y = I'm too lazy to type so I will confuse people and make them guess at what I mean.

    Yes, oh look 2 whole extra letters, OMFG!
    Why, oh look again another 2 letters, my fingers will break!

    Pretty much this

    Also, at the people saying stuff like 'Lol what n000bs shorted a 3 letter word' - I dont believe the thread is about whether or not shortening a 3 letter word is silly or not so your opinion is irrelevent.

    I bet this is secretly another one of the many "does this girl like me?" threads in off-topic disguised as something else...

    "Hey u wanna go on a date wit me?"

    "y lol"

    ^^^ This is why going to English class is important.

    Yes, anyone who doesn't conform to my arbitrary standards deserves to die!
