Account was hacked need general help.

    Hello.

I log onto play today and see that my account was banned.

I follow all the links and check my e-mail and it turns out three of my characters were transferred and faction changed to different servers.

I follow the instructions to have my account restored and it seems a simple enough process and am lucky that Blizzard was able to catch this within four hours of it happening without me needing to alert them.

I ran SpyBot, Malware Bytes, and my anti-virus software and it did not detect anything.

My password is different from my e-mail address than it is on my WoW log-in, and I change my e-mail address every two months.

I don't buy gold, or any other services that would compromise my account, nor follow suspicious links from phony Blizzard e-mails with bad English.

I am the only who uses this computer and I have never played Warcraft on any other computer except this one.

Heck, I don't even have that much gold to begin with.

I am just wondering how my account was compromised?

Phishing email probably or keylogger(that your AV missed) that's about the only probable ones to happen.

No idea dude, same thing happened to me though. My account was hacked/banned without my knowledge while I was taking a break from WoW. Upon return I learned it was hacked/banned but Blizzard restored it when I called them. I didn't have any keyloggers or anything just like you, I had no idea how it happened. I suggest you get an authenticator to help prevent this in the future.

Where do you pick up keyloggers, and if that is the case what program do I need or what do I need to look for to remove it?

I had the same thing happen to me just over a year ago. Had no idea how I got hacked cause my antivirus didn't catch anything
Get an authenticator! I have had no problems since!

Yeah, I actually just came back to playing wow from about a year ago. I resubbed on the 12th of February and got hacked last night.

Install Super AntiSpyware. It picks up a ton of stuff both spybot and Malware bytes misses.

Authenticators (free if you have an Android or iOS mobile device) can help prevent this in the future. Although they will never admit it, there is always the possibility that someone accessed a subset of Blizzard's database somewhere and retrieved your e-mail address (and possibly password) from that, then just brute forced your password through varying methods. Once you have the e-mail address it is not as difficult to grab the password. Also, if you have any RealID friends who have been compromised, or know people who have been, it is easy to reach deeper and deeper into that tree to find e-mail addresses also. Basically it comes down to getting an Autheticator, only putting people on RealID you really trust who won't get hacked, and not opening/responding to non-blizzard e-mail you get.

I got hacked for the first time in 7 years a few weeks ago. My PC was scanned fully with any spyware program I could use and virus software is up-to-date. How they did it concerned me. Luckily they only created the random jkhjhhhhpoihui type character to spam.

Authenticated now so hopefully no further issues.

Visit the guide in my signature for removing keylogger's.

Here are the most common ways you have been hacked:
-Downloaded a virus via a torrent
-Hit by trojan through shady website (porn, etc)
-Logged into email associated with WoW on a public computer (Or logged into WoW on a public computer, public meaning one that is not specifically your own or one in use by multiple people)
    -Purchased account from reseller

It could easily have been sitting dormant on your PC from before also so could have been from an email or website your browsed a year ago hypothetically.

You can get phone apps that provide authenticators free, I'd highly recommend it.

Also get a Authenticator....you can now though your Battlenet account make it so you have to use the Authenticator each and every time you log in now, this last patch added that too the battlenet accounts....before they use log in info and you only had to enter your number ever so often with that change they did last year ...but now you can force your system and yourself to have to put in that authenticator number each and every time ....

I will check into getting a free authenticator. I loathed the idea of paying Blizzard for one, and thought I was being vigilant enough to avoid being hacked.

Thanks all for the input and advice.

I would try out Culadin's link in his sig.

I would also look into getting an authenticator.

    lol

I wonder if Blizzard would let me keep two of my characters on the server they were hacked moved to. Both on Illidan, Horde side

Even the races they were changed to would be ideal.

Just went through this last weekend myself. I, also, am unable to figure out specifically what happened to compromise my system - I've run everything possible, but nothing comes up. I have to admit I was probably even more complacent than most about securing things - first, I'm pretty good with computers overall. Second, I use Macs, so there are fewer things out there that could do this (I don't make the mistake of saying there are no security issues with Macs; it's just few viruses and trojans are written for them, which means less chance of this happening). Live and learn, I suppose.

The authenticator was definitely the best step, methinks, after that point. Got the one for my iPhone. Sure, it's a bit inconvenient, but it seems like it will stop most of those issues and possibilities (though not all - there's never a 100% guarantee).

What I'd like is for Blizzard to provide a way to lock an account to a particular computer or set of computers that are verified in some fashion, and to allow us to lock certain aspects of our accounts (like realm transfers) without some additional verification to allow it...

Sometimes people are just too easy to predict...

If you loging name is Loverboy69

A hacker will try somthing like SEXY as your password and have a very good chance to be right....

People are SO unoriginal with their passwords...

Use a string of random letters and numbers that only YOU understand...PLEASE do not use your birthdate, street adress, phone number.....

I got hacked back in wrath. I called them and replaced all of my missing stuff, I wiped my hard drive, and reinstalled windows, and got an authenticator. All has been well since. ^_^
