The French had no qualms about thinning the herd. And if you want to make the colonists distinct from the British, then it means you owe the British more for sacrificing themselves for your safety. I disagree with this!
In fact as far as I'm aware the UK is the only european nation that outright bans guns for civilians.
Shotguns I'll give you (provided you're allowed 12 and larger gauges... because I mean... come on...) but not .22s.

I still don't know why Canadians are virtually indistinguishable from Americans for the most part. Is it really as simple as them being both a former colony and 90% living within 300 km of the border?

I lived in Toronto for 3 months and it was the same as it is here in Chicago when it came to daily life. I'm not exaggerating here, but not once did anyone think I wasn't Canadian. I guess if I had a southern accent they wouldve known.

I've seen an interesting historical hypothesis that were it not for 1812 and Canadians developing a strong sense of identity separate from the USA, that they would have eventually joined the USA through similar cultural bonds.

Any Canadian who isn't from Quebec will tell you that they're only different from us politically, and even that it's not that different.
Of course some Canadians would like to pretend otherwise since they dislike us for some reason, by they're a minority.

Wouldn't that be the exact opposite. British sacrificing themselves to keep a British colony under British control. Safety has nothing to do with it. You might as well call the revolutionary war a fight for colonist safety.

That's my point. Saying the colonists were anything but British is wrong, and considering their countrymen died for them, they should pay for their share of taxes.

The Revolutionary War was for rich white people to exploit natural resources, maintain slavery, push back the Demarcation Line, a lack of representation and the inherent British right to rebel against an unjust government. It's a mixture of pretty crappy, spiteful and vicious reasons and legitimate, meaningful and justifiable ones.

    It's a revolution!

It's probably just a harmless use of terms, I just want to be sure, is all.

    Quebec makes Canada female/effeminate

    Those are the breaks
Is it some sort of french=girlie thing? I've never understood that connection.

I think proximity would be the major factor. Just look elsewhere in the Anglosphere, Kiwis and Aussies are similar as well. Regarding accents as well, look at the article in the first page. There's a historical trend that colonized areas tend to preserve the accents at the time of their founding while the parent nation continues to evolve.

First EU settlers were Vikings in Greenland IIRC.
