Over 100 000 French ppl take to the streets to protest against Gay marriage

Pictured: Over 100 000 people took to the streets of Paris, Lyon, Toulouse and Marseille to protest against same-sex marriage.

(PARIS) - Thousands of people have protested in France against plans to legalise same-sex marriage and allow gay couples to adopt. Police said at least 70,000 took to the streets in Paris alone; while thousands of others protested in the cities of Lyon, Toulouse and Marseille.

They included Catholic groups and other backers of traditional family rights. President Francois Hollande has promised to change French law so that gay and lesbian couples can marry. Despite opposition from more than 1,000 mayors and the Catholic Church, his socialist government approved a bill on the issue earlier this month which will be debated by parliament in January. France already allows civil unions between same-sex couples, but extending their rights was a campaign pledge of Mr Hollande before he was elected in May.

Protesters in Paris wore pink T-shirts and scarves and carried pink balloons emblazoned with images of a man and woman holding two children's hands. "A child needs a father and a mother, he needs the paternal and the maternal side and with this bill that might not be possible any more," said one protestor, Marthe Vignault. "That's the way it is and we can't go against nature."

Saturday also saw counter-rallies in support of same-sex marriage. The issue is one of the most divisive Mr Hollande has faced, correspondents say. The head of the French Council of Catholic Bishops, Cardinal Andre Vingt-Trois, recently described gay marriage as "the ultimate deceit".

At present only married couples - not civil union partners - can adopt in France. A number of European nations, including Germany, Sweden and the UK, already allow gay adoption.

That's fucking disgusting. Nothing else to really say about it. I thought the French were supposed to be sophisticated.

meh if you take a peek at that picture most of the ppl are old and grey anyway, they probably hung gays back in their day.

bah some things are fine to protest about but if its not affecting you, why care?

When I read this I was really confused to be honest. I was (perhaps wrongly?) under the impression that France had a very progressive-minded population?

Just as many people in the world think that Americans are supposed to be stupid (okay, bad joke, but I couldn't help ^^)

Well, as in most countries, people protesting against this are retarded religious people and retarded elderly people.

@Herecius : we all have stupid people in out countries. Last months in France we saw extremist people (the far right) rise in popularity when the presidential election was held. Most people in France are progressive, but the minority that is stupid is heard more

France has a population of about 65,350,000. Judging them all on the 100,000 or so that are protesting is a little silly.

Anyway I wouldn't be worried, France has voted against religious opinion on other issues (burkas in public for example) in recent years. I would guess that it will be passed anyway.

I don't understand why being adopted by a gay couple is a bad thing when the realistic alternative is not being adopted at all. Until the amount of couples adopting children exceeds the amount of children that need to be adopted, it's irrelevant.

Of course, that's if it's even true that gay couples have worse parental outcomes than straight couples, which I'm sure it isn't.

Loud minority. Like the article says, it is mainly catholic groups protesting. Who considers Christian values in matters of humanism anyway?
I am certain the French majority do not mind gay marriage at all.

I hope the police gets really violent with these people. This is ridiculous, why is gay marriage such a big deal?

Why? Because they want to voice an opinion?

Eh, according to wikipedia France has a population of about 65 million. 100,000 people protesting gay marriage is nothing in comparison.

Also have to take into account this quote:

France already allows civil unions between same-sex couples, but extending their rights was a campaign pledge of Mr Hollande before he was elected in May.
They all knew he intended to legalise homosexual marriage, and yet he got voted into power. Suggests a majority agree with him.

So yeah, there may be 100,000 people actively campaigning against homosexual marriage (with probably many more hiding away), but I'd say they're still the minority. I'd bet there's a lot of french people facepalming at this protest right about now.

Are you making a point about how we're commenting on the protest group, or on how the protest group is commenting on gay couples?

Probably the people that want the protestors killed for voicing an opinion.
Oops, sorry, the thought police are at my door. Not allowed to have your own thoughts in this "progressive" society.
