Complete Guide to soloing Black Temple

    Introduction

Edit: A lot of previous information is now outdated, including the difficulty of some bosses and the need to be in a raid group. I have updated the thread accordingly. However the place is pretty much faceroll since 5.1, so it is unlikely you will need this guide unless you want the maps. In addition, it is now doable by an class, albeit with some needing higher item level then others. Good luck everyone!

Welcome to my guide to soloing Black Temple as a Monk. Firstly I know there is a Monk soloing thread, but I thought this deserved its own thread because it is quite large and would be awkwardly placed halfway down a random page in the thread. I am writing this guide because I remember being frustrated when I couldn't find a proper guide to doing this so I have created one myself.

    Soloing as a Monk

Actually killing the bosses only requires a small rotation change. Just use Expel Harm when you are injured instead of Jab when possible (which you should be already) and use your Tier 2 talent on cooldown if healing is needed. I strongly recommend Chi Wave for soloing as it provides the most single target healing.

    Why solo Black Temple?

While there are many reasons to solo Black Temple, such as the achievement or just seeing it, the main two reasons are the transmogrification blindfold Cursed Vision of Sargares and the twin Legendaries, the Warglaives of Azzinoth. Unforunately since the Monk is a recent class there is no tier sets to collect from here, but they let us have the Warglaives, so who cares.

    Required Specialisations and iLvl

You only need the Winderwalker Specialisation for soloing the instance now. My item level when solo'ing this was 468, which I achieved through a few LFR pieces, heroics and worse gear. Most of which is un-reforged, and is completely ungemmed and unenchanted. With proper reforges, gems and enchants as well as flasks, potions etc I could see this being people with maybe 440 iLvl, but probably no less than that. My recommended iLvl would be 455+.

    Where is the Black Temple?

(Click on images for a bigger picture)

First of all head to Outlands. If you don't know how to get there just look for the portal to Shattrath City in your Pandaria city portal hub. Then head over to Shadowmoon Valley, it is circled by a red circle.

Next head to the far East side of the zone, once again the Red circle guides you!

And finally one you get the the temple, you will notice the temple is shaped like a sideways U. While facing the temple, on the right end of the ground floor, which is approximately the center of the red circle in the 2nd image, you will find a small crack in the wall. This is the entrance to Black Temple.

    Foreword before the Boss Guides

This instance is not linear however there are no optional bosses, don't even bother trying to skip any. I have included maps because it can be easy to get lost in here on your first time.

    High Warlord Naj'entus

    Difficulty: 1/10

This boss is simple, just use your cooldowns and kill him quickly. If you are too slow he will use a shield and be immune to damage for a short time, just wait it out then kill him.

    Supremus

    Difficulty: 2/10

Just like High Warlord Naj'entus, but with a little more damage and much less strict DPS requirements as there is no shield. Just don't stand in his blue flame, punch him for a while and he falls over dead.

    Shade of Akama

    Difficulty 1/10

Easiest boss in here. When you enter the room ignore the stealthed Akama for now. Just kill the trash packs in the room, however you are unable to kill the 6 channelers on top of the stairs yet. Go back to Akama near the entrance and talk to him. Then just run up to the 6 channels and kill them, they die very quickly. Kill any adds that spawned and wait for the Shade to walk to Akama. Once he gets there they begin a bout of fisticuffs. Kill the Shade and collect loot.

    Teron Gorefiend

    Difficulty 2/10

Just like Supremus, punch him and collect loot.

    Reliquary of Souls

    Difficulty 3/10
Note: From here on out you can talk to the guy shortly after entering the instance that I forgot the name of, I will update this bit next time I go there. He will teleport you to the main room outside where you fight the Shade of Akama.

Since 5.1 this boss is no longer a challenge. You will be unable to heal yourself while killing the first head, but you shouldn't drop low anyway. Once it does AoE the spirit adds and they will heal you when they die. Once the 2nd head comes out just DPS him and when possible interrupt Spirit Shock. Note that when he has the damage absorbing shield up you cannot interrupt him, but just heal through any damage you take and kill him. Once again AoE spirits then kill the final head. It deals increasing damage to you but the damage should not ramp up to start hurting before it dies.

    Gurtogg Bloodboil

    Difficulty 7/10

This is probably the biggest gearcheck in the instance, as he does a stacking DoT on attacks that will really ramp up in damage towards the end. Just pop all your cooldowns and use Expel Harm and Chi Wave on cooldown. Remember you have Fortifying Brew if you need it and Touch of Karma will be a lifesaver, save it for towards the end when you are low hp and just let the boss slice himself up.

(Submitted by DemoBytom) If you are unable to meet the DPS requirements you can try it as Brewmaster using a similar strategy to Reliquary of Souls. Have your statue down next to you, and after a while he will disorient you and swap to the statue. If you are lucky he will cast Fel Rage on you, which doubles your healing and quadruples your damage. Just tear him apart when this happens.

    Mother Shahraz

Notable Trash: The large groups of low health Blood Elves will mind control you and reset themselves if you don't kill them quickly. You will be able to kill them in a couple of spinning crane kick ticks, but don't run around with them chasing you all day, just kill them immediately.

    Difficulty 3/10

The boss herself is quite easy. Make sure you pull the patrolling Sisters of Pain and Pleasure that circle her before grabbing her so they don't get in your way. Just kill her. Her damage output is surprisingly high, but nothing life threatening. You should be fine.

    Illidari Council

    Difficulty 7/10 . . . Specialization: Windwalker or Brewmaster

This fight is about as challenging in numbers requirements as Gurtogg Bloodboil. The 4 members share a health pool, so don't worry about which one to attack. Lady Malande casts Circle of Healing semi-often. Interrupt this as much as possible. They will often bubble each other making themselves immune to Physical or Magical damage, depending on the bubble. If they make the healer immune to Physical damage you can't interrupt her and just have to let it go off, it doesn't heal that much. Try to stay out of the Flamestrike, Blizzard and Consecrate as their damage is significant if you stay in them for a while, but a short dip is fine. Remember Touch of Karma and Fortifying Brew if you get too low. If they are in Touch of Death range you can use it, but it won't kill them. The one you use it on will drop to 1 hp then re-split their health with the remaining others. It is still worth using, but don't expect the fight to end when you use it. Once these guys drop you have a free ride to the end, Illidan is cake.

Don't worry if you die, they appear to be bugged in that after you pull them for a 2nd attempt they will drop to the hp they were on when you died the 1st time, so you can eventually just brute force it anyway.

    Illidan

Before you proceed up the ramp talk to Akama in the room where you fought the council, he will open the door at the top of the ramp.

Once you get to the rooftop where Illidan is talk to Akama again to begin the fight.

    Difficulty 4/10

Simple fight. Just attack him until around 70% where he will lift off into the air and drop his Warglaives on either side of the grate. Save your cooldowns for now, as this is the hardest part of an easy fight. Burn down one of the elementals that spawn, then quickly get rid of the 2nd. The incoming damage will be surprisingly spikey, but with cooldowns it will be over quickly. If you tank the two elementals in the middle of their grate where they are equidistant from the warglaives they will not enrage and will do much less damage. This makes this phase just as easy as the rest of the fight (Thanks DemoBytom). Once they are both destroyed he will land again and just start whacking him. Around 30% he will stun you for 30 seconds and do a bit of talking. When it wears off just finish him off, the incoming damage will be no problem. After a fairly long death animation he will fall over dead and collect your loot. Good luck on the Blindfold or Glaives!

    Conclusion

Thanks for reading and I hope this guide has helped you get through Black Temple. I may make more guides in the future if this proves popular. I will keep a tally of my total Illidan kills before both Glaives at the bottom for fun. If you have any additional tips, constructive criticism or questions feel free to post them below, and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Have fun!

    Total Illidan kills: 8

    Got my Warglaives, wooo!

Very nice guide! The thorough description of each boss makes it possible to get an idea on how to translate the fights for other classes. I started wondering if a warrior could solo RoS - that part2 is a bitch, but I'm thinking Avatar and Bladestorm might do the job - possibly while using PvP-trinket (do you know if this works against the disorient?).

I don't think Avatar will prevent Spirit Shock because it only prevents movement impairing effects, and Spirit Shock is a disorient. However Spirit Shock is really random and it may work, but I wouldn't count on it. Bladestorm should work, but once again Spirit Shock should be looked at on a case by case basis.

After a quick Google search, I found this thread http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/7006897334 requesting PvP trinkets to work on this boss, which is recent (3 days old as of this post). Assuming this person is telling the truth PvP trinkets will not work on this boss. Unfortunately I don't think this boss will be soloable by classes that don't have a pet of some sort until they can do enough DPS to zerg down 2 Million hp in ~15-20 seconds, which averages out at 100K+ DPS for a good 20 seconds. Definitely achievable this expansion, but probably not this tier unless you are heroic geared.

Thanks for the quick reply - pets you say... is disorient targetted at "not highest agro" or is it just random? I'm considering using some of the "spawn pet for x seconds"-trinkets. Like Miniature Voodoo Mask - or maybe The Horseman's Sinister Slicer - this might be better since you can change it after using it. Slightly offtopic since you are mainly adressing monks, but it's still on the subject of BT so hope it's ok :P

For Gurthrogg - you can go as Brewmaster and do the same as with Reliquary - use the statuse to gain initial aggro, then when he disorients you he'll turn to your statue. At that point since you're not his main target you'll get fel rage and be able to obliterate the boss :P
It requires a lot of luck though.. I've been doing it like this on my DK and her bloodworms at 85.

For Illidan - if you stand directly in the middle between those two elementals the dmg will be low. Elemental does high dmg due to enrage he gets when he's pulled too far away from his glaive. Just stand at the to of the "circle" when they spawn at equal distance from both glaives. Then when the fire shows just start slowly pulling them back ensuring that they are at similar distance from the glaives.

For Illidari Council - did Blizz change the bug of them not resseting the HP? Through like whole Cata when you wiped and pulled the boss next time - they isntantly dropped to the HP lv they had when you wiped. I was able to corpse-zerg them with ease back then xD

Don't forget her reflect dmg.. 100k DPS done to the boss is 100k DPS done to you that you'd have to survive...

It's cast on everything that is on the aggro table, including main tank etc.. Each time she hits someone her next Spirit Shock its CD and cast tiem is reduced.. The boss just cycles randomly though all targets that are in LoS (or chase them which was used by Unholy DKs in Cata)..

    Nice guide, thanks

Also you dont have to level the trial char to lvl10, just create one and when you log in copy this
    Code:
    /run SetAllowLowLevelRaid(true)
Now you can invite the trial char to your raid

Nice guide, good job Reliquary of Souls is indeed the annoying one in there, the rest wasn't any problem for me.

On RoS can't Xuen take the disorient ? Never tried with my BrM for now but seems to be a solution no ? At least he probably can take down the barrier by himself.

Thanks for all the replies. Xuen can take the disorient, but not like the statue. I have found that he disorients Xuen once then spams it on you instead of Xuen, only refreshing it on Xuen when it wears off and keeping you permanently disorient locked. However Xuen does keep up his Crackling Jade Lightning and can put a good dent in the shield despite this. With temporary item pets, I imagine they would act similar to Xuen in that they only get hit once and you get chain Disoriented, but if you have enough it may work as he would spend most his time refreshing every ones disorients.. I do not have enough of those items to test this right now.

And with regard to the bug where the Illidari Council's hp didn't reset, I didn't get to see it as I 1 shotted them but being blizzard, there is a good chance it is still bugged.

Finally thanks for the tips DemoByrom and umppa, I will update the guide shortly.

    nice guide

i just finished my first run and it was all windwalker and all 1shot.

the guide did help me not to get lost

Since RoS got nerfed and the disorient got a 15 sec cd, it cant stunlock you anymore so the tl;dr version of this guide should look like: Go in, spin, loot, hs out.

  12. #12
1.) You don't need to be in a raid
    2.) Do everything as WW
    Computer: Intel I7-3770k @ 4.5GHz | 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM | AMD 7970 GHz @ 1200/1600 | ASUS Z77-V PRO Mobo|

It's really easy now and there is no need for a guide. For 2nd Phase RoS just ready up 5 Chi, RSK, Tiger Palm, Xuen into a ToK, interrupt first Spirit Shock and you're set. I normally clear BT in 17-19 minutes from start to end. 11 Clears for Twin Glaives. Good luck hunting your glaives.

  14. #14
There is no need 4 brewmaster to clear bt...touch of karma and defuse magic are enough.

First of all, good job on the guide. Whether or not I agree with every detail isn't as important as the fact you put effort into it and it's easily followable by the completely uninformed.

    A few things though.

    1) I'm confused as to why you didn't just use Touch of Karma and Xuen to beat Reliquary of Souls. I never have any trouble with it compared to the the last two bosses.
    2) Illdari council as Windwalker? How do you survive? Even as Brewmastery ivll485 I get thoroughly beaten down and the council tends to survive another 100k hp or so of a beating after reaching "1hp" most of my runs.
    3) The Illidan advice is good but I've still seen rather huge spikes occasionally pop up when I thought I was standing in the right spots so one should still be careful and probably pop ToK as Windwalker if they're going to attempt it for the first time.
Soothing Mist:"Healing them for a minor amount every 0.5 sec, until you take any other action."
Jade Serpent Statue: "The statue will also begin casting Soothing Mist on your target. healing for 50% as much as yours. "
    [What's half of minor?]
"Statue casts Soothing Mist at a nearby ally for toddler healing."

As a 486 ilvl WW i just kill council in about 20-30s, just tiger palm then apply RSK on all of them and spam SCK till they are dead

to be honest i agree with SnorlaxJeng a guide, as nice as yours is by the way and thank you for taking the time to write it!

none the less though a guide is unnecessary i went in freshly dinged and just killed everything without much effort, i have still found no glaives, bah!

    ROS P2

Keep UP 10x Stack of Brew P2 begin, pop xuen, brew RSK, Tige Strike, Touch of Karma, DAMAGE...If Touch of Karma is down, Pop Defuse Magic, DAMAGE..Mob Down....

Illdari council as Windwalker? How do you survive? Even as Brewmastery ivll485 I get thoroughly beaten down and the council tends to survive another 100k hp or so of a beating after reaching "1hp" most of my runs.
Council, Attack the Pally, pop Xuen, pop Brew, DAMAGE, use Selfheal on cd i also put some Healing Orbs on my way. As usally i dont drop lower than 50%.

Illidan is easy shit just Elements are "hot" Keep Xuen, Brew rdy, If they are sporn damage and pop Karam if it is down before the Elementals died, Push Defuse Mage..save => Illidan down

I did this for the first time last night (487 WW), worked a treat. I targetted whichever one can heal and interrupted when necessary. Threw in a Chi Wave or Expel Harm whenever I dropped to 85%.
