That happened twice to me prior. One was a woman in an elevator who asked me "So, who do you think will get voted off Survivor tonight?" - that was actually the very first time I heard of Surivor. The second time was when a friend of mine called me up all distraught, telling me the bad news that Dale Ernheart died - and he actually got mad at me thinking I was joking when I asked him "Who is Dale Ernhear?" ((FYI for those who don't know: Dale Ernheart is, or rather was, apparently a popular NASCAR driver.)))

Well, beat me to it. :P
I think people assume a base level of pop culture :P
Survivor - Hard to not have heard of it in America (if youre not american, this is understandable) since it helped spawn the filth that is reality TV
Dale Earnheart - Also hard to have not heard of him in America (again, if youre not american this is understandable). He is a legend with the rest of his family in racing. I dont watch or pay attention to racing but I have still heard of him. Its like not hearing of wayne gretzky, michael jordan, or tiger woods.

AVGN is slightly understandable, though surprising. He was really popular (as indicated earlier, with nearly a million subscribers which is a chunk more than TB).

Sucks that youtube can just... shut people down. Cant really believe it either, was it because of SF? Does Sega care even LESS about their brandname now?

I bet you hate reading forum posts talking about a class's ability you don't know when they abbreviate stuff, huh?

If you didn't know what AVGN was, why would you bother clicking on this thread in the first place? .-.

OT: Wait, was this Sega's doing? Man, they suck so hardcore now that they have to try to get people banned from youtube now? Sega, what happened? You used to be good... (Reminds me of Rare >_>

But by "used to be good", I mean like years and years ago :3
Still wondering why I play this game.
I'm a Rogue and I also made a spreadsheet for the Order Hall that is updated for BfA.

This is another reason the DMCA should die slowly in a very hot fire. It probably wasn't even a serious attempt by Sega to get his video banned.

The content producers (ranging from game publishers to music producers to movie studios) all largely employ third party companies that specialise in web spider-type software that crawls around tube sites and torrent trackers looking for content that matches some kind of digital signature.

A lot of it is compiled into lists for later automated takedown request submission. A human's eyes never look over the requests to look for context, fair use, reporting/infotainment or parody. These get fired off to sites like Youtube/Google. They then put in place systems that cope with the deluge of automated requests they get by auto-banning anything that gets flagged to save time... Leaving the burden of proof up to to the video creator.

It's an ugly system that's fast getting out of control.
Knowledge is power, and power corrupts. So study hard and be evil.

This shows that you can't enforce a black list. If sega made a game you'd find good, you'd still buy it, even ignoring that they may infinge on your right. In fact, I bet that you won't even keep to this idea, and until their bullshit will target you too, you will ignore it. Because you can't say "well, I'll never buy anything ever again from this company... except this... oh, and this looks interesting" etc.

How many subscribers or views did he have? A few millions? Well I inform you there's 7 BILLION PEOPLE on the planet. So if you give a shortening of a name, you put what's it about unless it's something that's really well known. I mean, if I say, "man, USA did something" I expect people to know what USA comes from. But when I say TB or this AVGN, I expect many people to not know, so at least the first time it's nice to explain what you're talking about.

you can always go to www.cinemassacre.com to watch his videos

There's billions of people... millions = not much. I hate when people just start throwing random shit at me and expect me to know exactly what they're talking about.

I came here to see what all this youtube banning was about, are you trying to say since I didn't know what AVGN stood for I shouldn't have just come in here? I was hoping the OP would explain what AVGN was since I didn't get it, which is why I claim to this topic. This isn't a clique...

I guess I never really learned to give a fuck whose videos I am watching on youtube. I watch videos for their content, not because I have a fan hard-on for the bloggers who make those videos, so I tend to memorize the videos by their names, rather than by the name of the blogger who makes them.

Dale Ernhart I've heard of - albeit very little. I guess he never really took the same spotlight as Tiger Woods, Jordan or Gretzky. Same goes for that RussiaFPS guy's channel - first time.

I honestly think repeated DMCA Abuse should result in the death penalty. It may sound extreme, but DMCA Copyright trolling is equivalent to censoring freedom of speech.

Not the third parties that are paid to do it, but the actual ceo's of the companies responsible for DMCA Trolling should be hung publicly from the highest arch. Our society needs to make an example of people who try to bring about a state of corporate censorship.

...to participate in a community, and I was partially curious to find out what AVGN was - thinking it was a movie, game or band abbreviation. I was also curious as to why something was banned from youtube - which usually leads to an interesting discussion. :P

I got none of those from the OP. :P

Sorry but the video would not have just stopped in the middle like that. Unless YouTube was that obsessed and pushed a hard refresh on everyone's pages open of AVGN's content... You'd already loaded the video, it wouldn't just randomly do that and I doubt YouTube cares that much. O_o

No... the Beatles have been popular - not AVGN. AVGN is "niche" or, at best, has a cult following. "Popular" is one of two things in my book: 1) There's a good chance your grandparents have at least heard of it in a conversation, or 2) Has been lampooned on South Park. :P

Actually I am an American. :P

Keep in mind I heard of Survivor when it was first getting popular... it wasn't like I heard of it when it was on season 3. :P Also, my point was somebody assuming something on that calibre.

Now, Dale Earnheart - um, it's VERY easy for an American to not hear of him, at least if you're living up North. Most of my friends never heard of him until he died. He's a legend only with the NASCAR community, which only mostly resides in the Southern states. NASCAR is popular, but it's not up to the levels of popularity like Basketball, Football, ect... which is celebrated nationally. Popular, yes, but popular pretty much only in the Southern states.
