I wasn't saying it wasn't viable, just my take on the situation. I prefer mitigating damage rather than just straight taking it. That's why I use light armor in Dark Souls.

That and the fact there is a possibility of screwing up with dodge rolls. Blocking doesn't have many of those opportunities, especially with a heavy shield.
