    What language to learn?

The languages I know are Latvian, English, some Russian, bit of German and Spanish. However, now I am wondering what language will be in demand in future (e.g., from translator's perspective). I am not sure which new language I should learn- should it be Swedish or Norwegian (seeing demand rising) or perhaps get fluent in German or Spanish as I already have some knowledge? Or some other language? What are your opinions?

Where do you live? Where do you want to live? What job do you have? What job do you see yourself doing in 10 years time?

Chinese or Hindi wold be good ones.
It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the beans of Java that thoughts acquire speed, the hands acquire shakes, the shakes become a warning.

Because the India and China markets seem to currently have the most growth potential, and while English is a common language in those locations, it is not ubiquitous.

Very different language, but since my parents put me through the horrors of that I feel it is my duty to perpetuate it onto everyone else :x

English is rather better established in India, and not really a common language in China at all. Hindi has the drawback of not being the national language of India.

Well I am a translator by profession. I live in Latvia and the only place I would consider moving to would be Scandinavian countries and that is why I am considering learning either Norwegian or Swedish, but I am not completely sure yet.

Maybe finish Spanish or go into Portuguese. South American companies are coming.

French from the translators side would be good since most of EU's work gets done using french.

All of them. I make it a habit to collect languages. I have a specific phrase that I've learned in 17 languages so far.

Honestly, though, if you're looking to become proficient in a language for its usefulness, I think the best languages to know are English, Mandarin, and Spanish. With those 3 languages, you can get along just fine pretty much everywhere in the world. Most of Europe speaks English, South America is mostly Spanish and Portuguese (and Portuguese speakers understand Spanish), North America is all English and Spanish, English will do fine in Japan, and Mandarin will be useful in China. The educated in India speak English too.

It really depends on the market you want to tackle. Do you have any training as an interpreter? Do you want to translate for the EU or any other public institution, or do you prefer to stay in the private sector? General or technical/specialised? It's hard to tell without any details.
