It works like a chain reaction though does it not. Say someone famous/popular reblogs/likes it, their followers then can reblog/like it, and on and on, a couple of lucky hits with famous people will see things get millions of shares/likes.
I've seen the most stupid images on facebook get massive shares/likes because of the chain >.<
