Coming home after school and watching Toonami every single day are great memories of my childhood. Big O, Yu Yu Hakusho, Tenchi Muyo, Dragonball Z, Outlaw Star, Gundam Wing, etc. Those were amazing growing up. And i still love them to this day. But it sounds like to me you are watching what everyone else likes. You need to find something you actually like other than watching those shows just because people say they are good and popular.

I would suggest reading some manga, this may be the best way for you to sample a wide variety of material to determine what you like stylistically and which themes you find engaging.

If you liked beebop you might want to try FLCL

I was always a fan of series that strayed from action and focused more on story. Serial Experiments Lain was probably my favorite. I also liked another anime by Yoshitoshi ABe called Haibane Renmei that came out a few years later. I was also a fan of the Noir series.

I did watch things like Dragon Ball Z when I was younger, but like the OP never really got into it. If you don't like to watch the more childish anime, try looking for ones geared toward an older audience. Just remember, you can't group all anime together. Just as you can't group all live action films together.

So you watched and liked the good ones? Why don't you focus on finding more similar animes instead of bashing the less than stellar ones?

Watch Akira, Berserk OVA, Tank Police, Black Lagoon (which is a bit weaker, but still enjoyable), etc?

When you are comparing Ghost in the shell with Naruto it's like comparing "24" with some of the CSI rip offs. Yeah they might be okay and have their own appeal, but they are not your thing and their selling point is quantity over quality.

    It's not a genre, it's a medium.

There are a ridiculously large variety of styles and story types represented by the blanket term "anime". It's not exactly uncommon to enjoy one type of show and dislike another.

The first batch of shows you listed mostly fall under the shonen genre, which literally means "young person". They're action stories marketed for kids 10 and up generally.

The second batch falls under the heading of seinen, which is marketed towards young men generally 18-30.

So depending on your age and entertainment preferences, it's not surprising you enjoy the one and not the other.

    Kinda get it now.

I had this issue mostly because of the stuff my friends force me to watch. And the rather sad part is that most of my friends fall into the 25+ to 30 something category. Yet they seem to be able to spend hours raving about DBZ or Naruto.

I should reformulate my original post. I should rather be asking, why do adult wievers enjoy things DBZ or Naruto.

I started watching FMA once. I never know why I never watched the whole thing, because I liked the chapters I have seen.

Pretty much the only anime Ive ever watched. Well, I did watch the original 51 episodes 8 years ago but imo these are better. And atm Im watching Dragonball which is pretty good. I did watch DBZ every now and then as a kid so I thought I should see how it all began.
    Missing one episode but np.
And I think u cant watch it in some countries, tough luck.

Edit: but yeah I dont really watch anime so I cant really say anything more. :P

I was 10 when I started watching the original Dragonball so there is a certain nostalgia attached to it. I suppose other people feel the same way about DBZ. One Piece, Bleach and Naruto that were the first commercial "hits". Their simplicity makes them easy to get into anime.

That's what we call weeaboo manchildren.

Try out something that your friends would dismiss as "moeshit" or "kids' crap." There are thousands of anime titles out there. You can't judge before you have seen at least a couple hundred.

I can understand what you feel.

I was a big Anime fan after watching DBZ, Dragon Quests & stuffs but with time, some anime elements/cliches annoyed me more than I enjoyed its.

But after watching Gurren Lagann, I began to hate animes!
That was the most overrating, fanservice, dumbest anime I've never seen in my entire life.
Action scenes are so much exaggerated that It make them more stupid than "epic".
"Morales" of ths anime are just acclamations of aggresive juvenile stupidity. (most of them come down to: MY **** IS THE BIGGEST ONE OF THE UNIVERSE!!!)
Most of characters are either useless, either so much overrated, irritating that make me hate this "Anime masterpiece".
It's like guzzling all luxury foods in the world that make you puke!
And good f****** piece of **** of god b****, I f****** hate this brainless monkey punk who is Kamina!

But after, I've watching Kemono no Souja Erin, Full Metal Alchemist (2004), Spice & Wolf, Ghost in the shell, Ghibli animated movies, Ōkami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki,etc.. and I've refind my faith in anime.

I think you should stop watching Shounens manga/animes and take a look of more "serious" ones.

I tried to watch all the mainstream popular stuff like Dragon Ball Z, Gundam, Naruto, Inuyasha, Naruto, and recently I seen a reference to Attack on Titan and checked that out too.

But I just don't get it. Very often they are based on solid story backdrops, but Jesus the exposition is horrendous. Full of clitches, unamusing humor etc.

Then you have all the contemplation, the blablabla. Most of the time its bloody horrible. The action sequences are terrible. The characters are all half twits. It's like the Comic book cliche of the villain going on 4 hour explanations on how they will cut the hero in two using a complicated, prototype laser, while he is tied to a table, instead of just freaking shooting him in face. Anime feels the same but the protagonists do the same.

How is it enjoyable? They are terrible.

I don't say I never seen Anime that I would have liked. There are things like Vampire Hunter D, Hellsing, Blue Gender (this suffered from all the above, but the backdrop was too good) Ghost in a Shell, Jin-Roh, or the brilliant Cowboy Bepop.

These also use a lot of character exposition but they make sense and don't interupt the flow of the action. Plus they try to stay away from stupid cliches.

Now I might be missing something here.

    **EDIT**

I'll reformulate the question, as I have put it badly before.

Why is there such a strong following of the "Kiddie" category Anime? Many of my friends ages 25+ (some in their mid and late 30's) spend hours upon hours watching and rewatching DBZ or Gundam or stuff like that, and debating it, in debth.

(Yeah I work and hang out in a somewhat geeky enviroment.)
So what's the deal here? You like some anime and you don't like others; I don't see an issue here. There are plenty of people out there that loved DBZ, Bleach and Naruto, for example and there are the people that think those anime are the worst ones ever. It's all subjective. My advice is to stop worrying about the ones you don't like and focus on the ones you do.

Like others said you may like some anime and you dont simple as that.Just like you like playing Wow and you can hate all other games. Iam 24 and i still enjoy those shows aimed at 15 years old kids.As long i enjoy the story line i dont realy care about anything else.I watched over +100 animes and still cant get myself to watch one piece.Just not my cup of tea.

another suggestion is, dont watch the watered down english dub versions of the anime. Watch the uncut original with japanese subs. American tv cuts a lot of the stuff out, and they use voice actors that have no business voicing the characters they do.

Treat anime as you would a regular tv show in the west. Anime and manga is a very mainstream type of media in Japan, so you cant just look at it as a cartoon. There are many variations targeting different people.

Try giving a shot to more deep and dark stories like Monster, or Death Note, and see how you feel then.

Compared to the west, maybe. Large portion of anime airs late in the evening, and some even in the 1AM-2AM times.

It's best to try not to understand Anime/Manga.

Anecdotally, a good friend of mine when I was a kid was heavily into anime. No lie the guy must have had over 1k DVDs of this stuff, and I would regularly watch this shit with him. The only times I found what was going on even mildly interesting was when a monster was raping a girl (just for the sheer utter ridiculousness of it), which doesn't happen as much as you'd think.

So you watched hentai with your friend? Sounds like you have some issues

There's nothing to understand really. You either like it or you don't like most things. What I fail to understand is when people say "anime is shit" as if they've seen every episode of every series everywhere. "Anime" isn't just terrible animation and pedophile training simulators. There are a huge amount of genres and styles and odds are there will be something in there for you if you're willing to dig for it be it giant robots or magic-fueled kung-fu or effeminate demon hunters or whatever. Personally I enjoy anime simply because I'm into every form of animation but I have to admit I'm far fonder of western animation these days.

While I very much understand the problems with anime in general it irritates me when people watch a few episodes of anime and then decide ALL of it is terrible based on that. It's pretty closed-minded. I've seen some pretty spectacular stuff being done with the medium over the years.

The only anime I like are Dragonball Z and Akira. I really don't like the rest, but this is probably more due to the people I associate with it than the actual shows.

My general view of people who watch a lot of anime are shy, awkward and perverted people. I've seriously seen someone watching anime porn in the school's canteen. These people generally also don't look like they shower and they smell bad. Yeah, it's a stereotype I guess. But I've seen it way too much.

I don't know what Hentai means. The rape scene that came to mind was from Ninja Scroll, is that Hentai?

Many adults (holy shit I'm one of them!) appreciate shows like Naruto and Dragon Ball because blood hell we grew up with those shows. If you can honestly say you grew up with Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry, Scooby Doo, and other cartoons of similar nature and didn't like them for what they were at the time I'd have to question your sanity.

American entertainment focused heavily on comedy and dramas. Japan's manga/anime entertainment uses plenty of comedy and drama as well, but they also dig much deeper into the idea of "The Hero's Journey" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hhk4N9A0oCA if you like learning about boring things) which is the basic design of MANY shounen manga and anime. ALL people are capable of relating to the Hero's Journey because that is the very nature of the journey because we all are the hero of our own story. So the Shounen genre really just calls out to the dreams of people and insists that they are within reach.

But I'm rambling and starting to sound dumb at stupidlate o-clock. Like it's been said here by about a dozen people. You don't just "understand" anime, you appreciate different forms of it according to your tastes. No one can fault you for an opinion (although that being said there are people that will do their damndest to try) but it isn't fair to lump anime together in one big ball of things and try to evaluate it (this is what people that have never watched an anime typically do).
