People keep saying "If enough people stop tipping it'll change!" and that would happen... if enough people stop tipping. But it is culturally ingrained. As soon as I see these people making a decided movement to change the laws and make tipping optional in the US, I'll believe "I'm doing it to make a change!" is something more than just assuaging their own consciences for being cheap.

I like how people who support the tipping use McDonalds as a answere if u dont want to tip. Answere me..

Whats the difference? Is the food at a normal restaurant heavier than the one the personal at Mcdonalds carry? Cuse i cant see the diffrence.

Blame the people who decided to give u minimum wage rather than ppl who dont want to pay you extra cuse you carried thier food from the kitchen to my table.

And people keep saying we should tip because "its customary". Thats a piss poor reason.

    I like the tip model!

It is better because you get to pay what you feel is appropriate for the service you receive, instead of a set amount. They do a bad job, you pay less, they do a great job, you can pay more.

I also like that is friendly to the poor who cannot afford to tip, but also can't afford the inflated menu prices a no tip system would create. Now I dont feel like the poor should regularly be showing up and not tipping, but for special occasions having the option is good.
"Gamer" is not a bad word. I identify as a gamer. When calling out those who persecute and harass, the word you're looking for is "asshole." @_DonAdams
When you see someone in a thread making the same canned responses over and over, click their name, click view forum posts, and see if they are a troll. Then don't feed them.

Don't care about tipping, their job isn't part of my responsibillity. If i tip it's because i wanted to, not because others think i should.
    You can hate me!

I asked him the key to his success as a waiter, I mean cmon, I have a steady job with a guaranteed 40+ hours a week and he made more than me, his reply, "I always get a tip no matter what and usually good ones. I treat all my tables like they are Kings and Queens.

Bottom line, you want to get paid, deserve to get paid. Most of the time when I take my wife out, I see nothing but attitude, people are rude and non caring, I order drinks, they take forever to bring them, ask for silverware and get a look like I just killed their mother and don't you dare complain if your food wasn't cooked right.

I went to a Dennys last week, I ordered eggs over medium, I got eggs that were freaking half raw, I asked the waitress about it, she shook her head and rolled her eyes.

    I was like...wtf?

She brings me a new set of eggs about 20 min later and the were overcooked.
I couldn't agree more. If they make it worth it, then they deserve a tip.

If you're a surly Sally who shows up to drops the plates on the table and we don't see her again for 40 minutes, you aren't getting shit.

If we're supposedly paying for service in addition to a meal, then the service better be stellar, other wise just the meal please, do better next time and I'll consider giving you extra.

People keep saying such things, but really, in reality very few waiters would actually do bad stuff to one's food.

One more reason to not tip. If you're really so butthurt about your wage then why don't you take it on your boss? Blackmailing customers isn't going to help you, esp. when it's done in secret.

Do you have experience as a server? Because I am not certain how you are going to enlighten people who have experience in the profession with your one anecdotal example.

Tips vary a lot by restaurant/clientele/geographic location. A good server will (almost) always do better financially than someone who has poor social skills/an inability to multitask. But, sometimes tips have nothing to do with actual service--tipping is culturally ingrained, some people do not like to tip for a variety of reasons, no amount of good service will change that. This also means that sometimes people tip a server more than they deserve when service is poor to mediocre, as well.

I would not envy your friend even if he did make more money than you briefly, there are a lot of downsides to the profession.

Wow.....so many stingy people here. Do you really think talking to their boss is going to help them get paid more? This has been how the system works since the past how many decades? This is not a job you can support yourself with without a tip..... The reason for the tip is because they are serving you. Of course if they do a bad job, you have every right to leave the smallest tip possible or nothing at all.....but if they do their job well, why wouldn't you tip them? Are people really that cheap?

No, talking to their boss is going to help if they give you grief for not tipping like fucking with your food.

Turns out bosses that run successful businesses don't just take a customer's word as gospel. I realize that in hypothetical internet forum scenarios everything black and white, but in reality, that's not how things work.

That may work for some places, but given sites like Yelp, widespread bad attitudes from management can obliterate a business.
