Riding on a flight path and thinking "Man, it'd be awesome if I could actually control this bird and get it to stop taking these stupid routes where it turns what should be a 20-second trip into a 10-minute trip" to myself. I was pretty happy when Blizz announced that we'd get flying mounts in BC. This is not a flight map from Classic, but it illustrates pretty well what I mean:



The only thing I really miss about the game before flying mounts is wall jumping. That was fun if you were bored and had a lot of patience. Course, it also meant asshats could get on rooftops in lowbie contested zones and snipe people, but GMs would sometimes put a stop to that.

OMG 2k you were considered rich back in TBC.

I had about 4.5k in Vanilla. Yeah, I grinded that much and I don't know how I was able to keep doing it without getting bored. I guess I didn't have a life.

But yes, getting your first mount or first epic mount was truly something you earned after a lot of work. For me, getting a Kodo mount on my Orc was also quite the achievement. There weren't a lot of people who had a different race's mount.

It's shit now, but I don't remember being upset about running back in Vanilla.

Besides, at one point while I was exploring the world I traveled through half the zones on foot, just because I was excited to see what was there even if I was low level. Now that was an epic journey full of danger and it took quite a few hours, but it was truly worth it imo. That was exploration that WoW has been lacking ever since imo. Now don't get me wrong, I don't want to go back to walking everywhere, but I have some good memories of doing it in Vanilla.

I never thought about "20 seconds trip", but I always wanted to control that quimera to go to other places.

This guy invited my level 20ish NE hunter to a guild called Dragon Elite on Proudmoore. The dude then escorted my friend and I through dun morogh, the mountain pass, and across wetlands in to SW. The world felt so huge. People used to do kind things like that all the time, not troll fucking trade chat and put people down constantly. It's not the game though, it's just the culture of teens and early 20's folks these days. They all think they're badasses for some reason.

Quests that took place in multiple zones. (Zul'Farrak Mallet and a quest that had something to do with Arathi named something like 'The Sun, Moon and Mace'? No idea, and I totally remember it not being worth it, but I did it anyways and it was awesome.)
Quests that you had to choose to do, rather than having them thrown at your face and just killing/looting stuff that is close by.
Running from Ironforge to Menethil on foot for the first time on each of my toons.
The dragons in the Badlands on my pally. That was a blast.
Having no idea what I was doing or where I was going. Playing was as much about learning as it was about playing.

That said, I don't know that I want any of that to go back (other than maybe multi-zone quests). That was fun about Vanilla WoW, but there are different sources of fun now.

One of my first experiences in WoW (no flying involved, so it qualifies for this thread):
Having just moved in my own apartment I FINALLY had DSL. What was the first thing I did?
Yup get dat 10 day free trial of World of Warcraft.

I made a human mage and started fooling around. At level 12 or so, I encountered the NPCs for the lunar festival and found these wonderful dresses. I wanted one. Badly. So I started to search for more ancestors. When I was only missing one coin, I read somewhere that there was another elder in a place called "Booty Bay." I looked up a map of Azeroth and started walking. Duskwood was creepy, even more so when every spider just had a skull instead of a level, but I somehow made it to the entrance of Stranglethorn valley.

Needless to say those tigers got VERY hungry.
Suddenly a lv. 32 Draenei warrior named Tizidia rescued my newbie bum and curiously asked me why a lv. 12 would try to enter strangle. I told her about the Elder and she just called 3 more friends and escorted me down to Bootybay.

While I was lying on the ground for half the trip while they fought of half the inhabitants of the valley, that my low level aggroed, I fell in love with the female Draenei model and animations.
That was on day 2 of my 10 day trial.
The next day I went out and bought WoW+TBC and made my little priestess, which I still main after 7 years now.
And yes: I immediately got her the pretty dress too.

I think if I started WoW today, I'd just be laughed at and ridiculed, when I'd try to do what I did back then.

My very first character was Alliance side and the central hub back in Vanilla was Ironforge, everyone loitered or idled there. In between trying to get groups for BRS or Scholo a favorite hobby of mine (if the pillars on the short bridge to the AH were occupied with AFKers) was to jump across the little 'pit' between the bank and AH. Problem was money was slow to get and the only way to scale that pit was with an epic mount. I was insanely jealous of the people who were able to do it, my moth ridden wallet unable to fund my dream of being cool like those players. Then one day I realized if I had Spurs enchant on my boots and Carrot-on-a-Stick equipped I could *barely* just manage to cross on my ghetto mount.

Not exactly a pre-flying memory per se, but I remember getting my first flying mount in TBC, realizing it flew at 60% speed and wishing that they never implemented flying at all if they were going to slow me down. I was a kid back then, so 5k gold for 280% seemed completely out of reach (though I did get it eventually). Only used flying when it was absolutely necessary because damn 60% speed was fail.

I see some people in this thread will really enjoy the fact that there are no flying mounts in WoD till 6.1 hits.
I'm sure they will experience all of their "Awesome nostalgia no-flying-mounts" memories when the expansion comes out.Just like in vanilla! /sarcasm

To be honest,I always enjoyed flying mounts.Also trying to force myself to not over-use them to break immersion.

Or not. I don't have any nostalgic memories. Only thing I remember is that is was a pain in the arse. Much better now days. You should be able to buy a mount at level one but.

Anyway, the world felt much more like a world back when you weren't able to fly, and I'm pretty sure most (if not all) who played before flying was even part of the game agrees - which means I believe that most of those that disagree in this thread did not play before TBC.

Exploring did feel awesome in a game where you weren't supposed to fly - it won't be the same in Draenor, just like it wasn't the same in Outland, Northrend or Cataclysm, because while you might not have flying at the time, the zones were intended for flying, which means there's no real "hidden" stuff.
