Going through the Dark Portal the first time was something else. But I do like Borean Tundra the most.

My friend keeps joking how i stumbled down the steps of the dark portal.

For me that was an awesome moment, going through, and seeing a whole new world with demons sieging the portal. Would have been a really good time for quest phasing, kill them and then more of your faction comes through!

Wotlk, i joined that almost a year late so it was meh.

cata was awesome, not sure how many went Hyjal first, but Vashjir was amazing, then slowed down after the first minizone.

MoP, you start off bombarding an alliance base, which was awesome, but as awesome and more effort put into it, i feel like tbc and cata robbed that epic feel from me already. So i gotta say it was TBC.

Lorewise, im sure Deathwing ripping parts of the world apart is teh most epic start to an expansion.

I started playing late in TBC, so I wasn't there for the rush, but going through the Dark Portal still felt epic. Since I had only started playing, my experience is likely bias, because everything was still so shiny and new, and held a sense of wonder capable of inspiring awe. I hadn't done enough raiding, or seen enough Trade chat to be old, cranky, and jaded yet. It was probably more my state of mind than the quality of the other entrances that made them fail to move me.

I started playing in BC, and I still get goosebumps every time I enter Hellfire Peninsula. I think that going through the Dark Portal and seeing a barren wasteland with demons running amok sets the tone very well.

Hellfire was alright. I'm sure I was "impressed" at the time, but... I don't remember it with any supreme measure of "awe and wonder."

Howling Fjord, however... that had an awesome entrance... the burning ship, Utgarde Keep, the giant cavern... Especially when you synch it up with the transport music:

“Do not lose time on daily trivialities. Do not dwell on petty detail. For all of these things melt away and drift apart within the obscure traffic of time. Live well and live broadly. You are alive and living now. Now is the envy of all of the dead.” ~ Emily3, World of Tomorrow

This so many times. The Alliance base there may be somewhat modest, but the scenery and landscape are breathtaking; mountains, cliffs, rivers, lakes, forests, chasms, bridges... nothing in Borean comes even close to that. Without mentioning the quests that, almost straight away, threw you in the middle of Vrykul and Titan lore, in front of the Lich King himself and to recover the Ashbringer from the deep crypts swarming with undead. Howling Fjord must be one of the best zones in the entire game.

If I could multi vote I would put both WotLK borean tundra and TBC Hellfire at the same place .. but since I can't I voted for WotLK.

No matter how of a sub-par mediocre expansion TBC was ( if we don't count leveling which was/is awesome ) , the entrance is to be remembered.

But I am more of a nordish snowy vikingy likey thingy fan, so WotLK gets my priority .

Either Hellfire or Howling Fjord. Going through the Dark Portal for the first time was a pretty big deal. But there's also the Alliance boat ride to Northrend.

I don't include pre-expansion events in my evaluations, since those were one-offs and anyone arriving late (or like me, were deployed when it happened) will never experience them.

TBC: The demon battle after you exit the portal is cool looking, but then you just bypass it with a quick flight to your faction base. B-
WotLK: Both zones are just sedate zeppelin rides. Pretty zones, but unimpressive entrances. C
Cata Mt. Hyjal: I saw what they were trying to do, but Ragnaros' entrance just didn't grip me like it should have. Maybe the surrounding environment was just too nice, robbed the fire lord of his presence. B-
Cata Vashjir: The boat ride then getting smacked around by a giant sea monster was well done! Shame the rest of the zone was a pain in the butt. B+
MoP: Very well done! Actually getting to actively participate in the entrance to the expansion makes it stand out. A

    So for me:
    MoP > Cata V > Cata H = TBC > WotLK

It's really close between BC and Wrath personally. Going through the portal itself and getting thrashed by the Fel Reaver was immersing. Still, the riveting music playing upon entering the Howling Fjord was quite an experience, complimenting the feel and landscape extremely well.
    Stay salty my friends.

hellfile peninsula was somewhat interesting. actually going thru the portal and that one week when everyone was playing the same few zones was pretty fun.

the other side of the portal was like.... WOW!! look at those elites being held back by a few npcs. and the size of the portal on the hellfire side.

void reaver or whatever was called.. it sure got more than one. the mobs were new. lots of gear upgrades for everyone since gear was actually obtained back in vanilla rather than given away .. ahem.. timeless isle.... so getting new gear from quests was exciting.. even for people with naxx/aq40/bwl there were some sidegrades/small upgrades (depending on slot).

looking at the sky was like.. PRETTY COLORS... the terrain itself was meh for the most part.. hellfire only had the one fun zone were you would go do dailies at 70.. near kazzak or w.e that world boss's name was that got kited to stormwind once and that got 1 shot by a pally on another occasion.

I just got this mental image of some fat orc/panda/tauren/dwarf stumbling and crashing down the stairs into the army of demons like a bowling ball... effectively angering all of them...

definately the vashjir entrance for alliance. Bud made it even more awesome. "oh hey the guy from zul aman and grizzly hills is back! He's still screwy i see"

    This. Totally.

The MoP entrance makes a close cut, but it felt too streamlined.

Hmm, it's a close tie between The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King.

My first time stepping through the Dark Portal and seeing that alien skyline with the epic ambient music as I stepped into a vast unknown was breathtaking.

However, nothing really compares to that boat ride to the frozen north with the Celtic music playing and being greeted by the snow-capped peaks and Aurora Borealis of Howling Fjord.

Both will hold a special place in my heart forever.

For me it is a tie between entering Howling Fjord and Vashj'ir. Howling Fjord was awesome taking the boat through the Fjord and seeing the imposing figure of Utgarde Keep, with proto drakes and Vrykul everywhere.Vashj'ir was just as awesome, getting attacked by the kraken, gathering up the rest of the survivors and establishing a base.

TBC because before that WoW was mostly flat surface with little steep hills and what not. Hellfire Peninsula was unlike anything before. You saw distant stars and planets in this alien world and lots and lots of demons.

You went through portal and ended up on the other side with much larger one too.

After that I would say Cataclysm Vashj'ir. Then WOTLK Howling Fjord and last MOP Jade Forest.

When I entered Outland for the first time I shat bricks in the view of the gigantic Pit Lord and all those elite demons that had thousands of hp. I remember that I was afraid of dying even while on the flight path.

Northrend was not a big deal for me as a Horde in Howling Fjord, mainly because I went there by Zeppelin.

Vashj'ir was a pretty cool zone and felt really different because you didn't expect to go there like this.

Jade Forest is the worst entrance for me but mainly because I was so focused on getting to 90 fast that I didn't even care how or why I was there. Generally MoP was very boring for me after a month or two.

So the winner is Hellfire with the Dark Portal.
