Blizzard naming policy too harsh?

People don't read the naming policy then bitch about it when they find out they broke it typical MMO-Champ forum goers. Here's a hint: name's can't be a reference to the real world so If you use a real world word you can be seen as breaking the policy not that hard to figure out

The part I find unfair is that they do not apply the rule to everyone. If customer support finds that someones name is unacceptable, it should be applied to all people on all servers with that name, and the name then blacklisted. It does seem to be a case of "you're fine unless you get reported" which makes it frustrating when people genuinely want a name that they don't believe is inappropriate, then find out every server has someone named that and no one cares.

Also to add insult to injury, our guildie changed her name (since she gave up) and someone registered another char named Pollon on the same realm

I think it's more they have an automated system that auto flags you if someone reports it, we used to do that all the time. You can make up some crazy reason for it being offensive exactly like this and almost every time they'll force a name change.

The naming restrictions can be stupid in many cases. I had a human warrior named Garrosh, who I made in Vanilla, before anyone had ever heard of Garrosh Hellscream. Yet in Cataclysm I was forced to change it, since I "copied" it from an NPC.

I had a character named Sindragosa, and another named Keristrasza. Sindragosa was forced into a name change as well as several other people across different realms because she was a "Current expansion raid boss." And apparently, did not want people getting my character confused with the raid boss.... seriously, that was what they told me.

I wouldn't have been so angry, but they didn't bother forcing a name change on the OTHER character because they thought it was cute. Ive had several GMs laugh with me and "RP" asking how the red flight was doing. To which I would respond, "I don't know, I'm still trapped in the Nexus." I made 3 tickets over the issue, the first too told me "To bad." Basically, but the next day my friend on another server got that name back. My third ticket I complained how it wasn't right she could have it back, but I couldn't since it was near the end of the expansion anyway. So they let me have it back, for $10. Made me pay for a name change. :/

Reported the name "Chokefatkids" the other day. Was quite funny, because less than 5 minutes later he leaves my group. I looked him up a while later, and noticed he wasn't on the armory. Kinda funny if it actually happened that fast.

This. I feel they don't enforce the naming policy nearly hard enough. People with ascii characters in their names (ok, at least on US/English servers) are against the rules, but Blizzard does nothing to stop it.

A few years ago i was the guild leader of a guild named Must Farm or Family Dies.

had this guildname for about 2 years with different Gamemasters laughing and complimenting the name over the course.
All of a sudden i get contacted that the guild name is in violation and is forced to be changed. No matter what i said mattered to the GM.

I was pretty angry at that.

If you are talking about characters such as é, it used to be against the naming policy, however, characters like that are no longer against the policy since a few years ago.

Never had an issue with names. But well... since I really dislike "funny" names and all kinds of special ticks within that's normal I guess.

I find it so lousy to not be able to have a simple or highly desirable (reference, etc.) name due to 1-per-server.
