Circumstance however is basically 'rose tinted glasses' of the present.
If you're at a 'good' point in your life and you're playing with a bunch of friends who are all enjoying and as invested in the game as you are, then any time you're playing is good times. You're raiding and pvping with your buddies, life is on cruise control, any little niggles are squished beneath a generally good attitude.
Players at a bad point in life (maybe money's tight, work is shit, friends have drifted or stopped playing), that negative attitude is projected into how we feel about the game, the tiny annoyances are suddenly infuriating and blown out of proportion, and without the positive attitudes of friends, you're left to wallow in this quagmire of ill-feelings that consume WoW related forums.
The actual quality and content of an expansion matters very little when compared to your own state of mind and attitude.
