While political discussion is fractious, it's still mostly actual discussion, even if a lot of it is of the "you're wrong because blarg" "no you because flarg" variety. There's certainly ways to post badly about politics, but the other rules take care of that when it happens.
It isn't even really about people behaving well in threads. It's about how many break site rules. The topics we've ended up disallowing always ended in a rash of banned users for breaking other rules, and usually a closed thread as a result. So now, we just close it pre-emptively, and avoid the rash of bans. A lot of us don't have any issue with discussing those particular topics (I actually enjoy debating/discussing theology and comparative religious studies), but we don't like banning a ton of people whenever they crop up, so this is the lesser evil.
