How would an HBO space sci fi show be different from a Netflix one?

Suppose if HBO and Netflix thought competing with Star Trek Discovery and The Expanse was a good idea, what would their space sci fi shows be like? Would a style and story reminiscent of Mass Effect be good for HBO? Or would a colorful humorous Guardians of the Galaxy style of show be better for Netflix?

Do not want to be that guy...but boobs in space. It will be star trek discovery, but instead of fading away from sex and gore, showing it full frontal.

I actually think the best way to go on HBO/Netflix would be amping up the brutality of space, and the isolation. Make it a genuinely horrifying show for the levels of madness people get into.

It's a great big nothing out there, man, and I think most sci-fi shows romanticize it too much. Including and especially Star Trek.

BSG is on amazon prime right now, so I'm rewatching that again. I don't think netflix or hbo could recreate what made that show so good. There'd be a lot of explosions and sex and it'd be less about the story, the journey.

What is it and people saying HBO is just sex? Do they only watch game of thrones and missed series like the wire?

it'd be incredibly childishly edgy and borderline porn, because HBO is apparently run by hormonal teenagers.

    More violence and more nudity

HBO has tons of great shows that don't have much nudity. They just don't do that well. The Leftovers was amazing, but it only lasted 3 seasons. Maybe two real nude scenes in 3 seasons of the show. You saw more of Justin Theroux's ass than any boobs.

A lot of shows on HBO just have nudity for the sake of it. Be it The Night Of, Westworld, Game of Thrones, etc. Starz is beginning to follow this. But I think Showtime takes the cake; however they do it to move the narrative forward, not to stop and drool.

Sopranos, Oz, Shameless (might not be HBO but ya get it). It isn't just sex it is just that HBO can show that stuff and they do, because they can and it brings a little edge/realness to the show.

I'm not sure how they could create one that could compete with Star Trek, really space shows are a lot about writing. A LOT about writing, otherwise they get pretty dull or they turn into basically your typical war trope in space. The best space TV shows are usually pretty well written TNG, Battle Star, Dr. Who, DSN, etc. It really depends on a lot on clever writing. A lot like high Fantasy. You really need some good plot runs and well created characters otherwise you are just doing X trope IN SPAAAAAAACE!

If they wanted to jump into space scyfi, I would expect at least on of them would reboot babylon 5, which has its own tone but still has room to utilize the cable aspect with.

i don't think either network would go will eye candy for the sake of eye candy to keep the geeks happy for two simple reasons, they have experience with story as teh hook, and cgi isn't cheap.

Westworld nudity wasnt pointless it was to show how humans didnt care for their dignity because they are robots. As well as they are part of the entertainment when you are paying 300k a day or w/e it was to visit the park. And people like sex so it would be a big attraction to go to the park. Its a big part of the story for a reason.

Of course it was NOT about the nudity, but it was casually, even gratuitously there. It did not diminish the show in any way, but neither did it really add anything.
Prostitution and the crime world are linked. Shocking. It was about getting clean money, not sweet ass.

In regards to above comment, for once, they (sci-fr writers for tv/movies) should not look too much into the journey. Possibly not even have "journey". Defiance had a bit of what I am mentioning. More life, less grand adventure (although Defiance went loosey with that, especially towards the end).
Maybe even the main thing happening in that "universe" take a backseat to people living in it. Like a great galactic war/conflict, but its all about a family, group of people/friends or a community/organisation in a relatively safe place or interacting with the conflict at an arms length.

Yeah, but you don't have to show it. Sex has been in TV and Film since the start without showing it graphically or without full frontal nudity. TV shows without the ability to show nudity get away with sex and violence all the time. HBO just never misses a chance to dump tits, limp dicks and bush into any scene possible. I have no issue with this, but you keep adding one show to the mix The Wire,it has plenty of unnecessary nudity, granted some hits that necessary mark. But that is the draw to HBO, Starz, Cinemax etc is that they can do all that stuff, it is a way they justify being a premium channel.

There is no way that a Space drama show escapes the HBO panels without a decent amount of nudity and gore. It just wouldn't happen.

Same happened to Sonja Sohn and Idris Elba.
I guess you have a point with the lawyer/daniels etc. It didnt feel gratuitous though just realistic and gives it a gritty quality. It was never doggystyle shots of jessica's alba's ass to bump up the viewer count
