Even if VR seems gimicky now it won't be very soon. Augmented reality will push VR tech into the mainstream. Because augmented reality is literally the future of all communication.

There are a lot of limiting factors right now. GFX processing has to catch up. Once it does and the equipment is light weight there's nothing stopping it.

I've had the game for less than 3 weeks and already got 185 hours played. It's so fucking funny.
And some of the worlds are really crazy, such as the Sword Art Online one and the many clubs you can find.

Augmented reality isn't a new thing though, it's been around for decades. Todays phones are easily capable of a lot if augmented reality. Hell, my Sony Z1 Compact had augmented reality games, and before that, there was a console called the Gizmondo that had augmented reality games. Pity the companies upper management shitshow made news before the devices capabilities did.

You’re right. And, yet, your arguments are still the same as they were then. While it seems likely that VR will continue to advance, it gaining widespread usage doesn’t seem likely any time soon. When it takes top end gear to run a new tech it takes a while for it to become ubiquitous as the majority of users can’t afford said prices.

And even with top end tech VR isn’t amazing right now. So, yeah.

That's a silly argument as well. People buy 1000 dollar cellphones and update them every single year. All they need is a good reason to do it. And AR is that reason.

I think that the technology for VR is moving way too slowly. Screen door effect... seriously ? This should have been eliminated years ago. We need something like 16 megapixels per eye, it's not that impossible.

First of all today's phones are not capable of a lot of augmented reality. Second of all games are not the main use case for augmented reality. Communication is. Watch Denno Coil if you want to see what I mean. Augmented reality will be the data layer that covers the Earth. If you don't have it you will not experience the world like everyone else does. It will create social networks beyond what we can imagine today.
