So, the problem with this is you're phrasing each political position as if Republicans are stupid and their ideology is absurd. For abortion, it's not about controlling women, its about not killing fetuses. For "destroying the environment" its letting the free markets lead to environmentally friendly results, not government, on gun control its about having the right to own guns and hunt/shoot, and for all around enjoying them.

I am a liberal like you, but when you phrase a viewpoint like the other side is stupid it doesn't allow for a real discussion on these incredibly complex and multifaceted issues.

from my experience people who simply view both parties as the same fall in two categories:

a)people with limited understanding in politics who often expect to see cataclysmic events after the election of a new government and are usually oblivious to smaller changes around them, so if the elections are not followed by immediate and drastic changes in their everyday life they'll just assume that 'it's all the same'

b)people with extreme opinions that are so far removed from the 'center' that pretty much all parties with a chance to win the election are the same to them, for example a hard line communist would view all parties the same, to him things are simple: 'aren't they all capitalists? see they're all the same', same could be said about anarchists, far right loons, neonazis etc

The only reason gun control is so hard lined at the federal level, is because of the lobbying being done. NRA actually proposed a ban on a gun alteration after the Vegas shooting. Which should explain the only gun control that NRA will let pass. The one that doesn’t impact their bottom line... so... feel free to think of any regulations on guns, that won’t negatively impact NRA, and you’ll have “sensible”, bipartisan gun control.

For every liberal wanting to ban or restrict guns, you will have a conservative wanting to ban or restrict abortion. For every Republican wanting to restrict immigration, you will have a Democrat trying to restrict speech.

In the end, they are willing to sacrifice their stated principles in order to push their agenda onto others.

Both parties are essentially the same in any field of core activity. Both are effective for the Welfare-Warfare state, though they disagree only in minutiae of what to spend on and perhaps the tax rate. Issues like Abortion or Same-Sex marriage are not particularly massive issues.
