No, every gun has to be registered. Many gun types are illegal, and not that many stores even stock guns because of the hassle of verification. Basically only hunting and outdoor specially places.

Part of the US's problem is that gun control varies state-by-state and sometimes even county-by-county or municipality-by-municipality, instead of being enforced effectively on a coordinated, national level. That's generally a pitfall of our federalist style in general, but it's not like we haven't used the fed to nationally regulate legal questions that would otherwise be in the hands of the states (drugs) before.
