This isn't a uniquely american thing, but it seems much more prominent there that people can't just sing the damn song.
here the 4th stanza, used in "Sum of all Fears". perhaps they should sing another stanza every other time.

Haka (if it was meant) is the traditional challenge performed by All Blacks of NZ and other teams and counts not as anthem IMHO
I'm willing yo bet that you can't. The Star Spangled Banner is widely known to be an incredibly technical and vocally challenging musical piece.

That's not really a core issue. There are plenty of times when the anthem sucks but no one gets upset because they see it's Joe nobody singing it and earnestly trying to do their best.
The issue here is that Fergie was clearly doing something different, intentionally being tongue in cheek, and it was awful.

I definitely don't disagree that it was extremely weird and sucked. I think she was trying to do something that she saw as cute and clever but which fell utterly flat.
If she wasn't anyone famous, hadn't tried to put a spin on the anthem, and had still sucked then I just don't think anyone gets mad about it.
