I find David Bowie covers to usually be better than his. The man himself thought he was a better song writer than performer. Not to say he wasn't a great singer, but he was kinda right. His songs in the right hands are great. Just listen to this:

Perhaps he wasn't, but he surely made that good by being a great performer on stage, and simply by making legendary albums. He could sound like a guy having 15 years of throat cancer, it would still be good.
