    Scourge are Void-Warped Souls?

    This could be a stretch!
    It may not be.

Arthas is depicted all realistic here, and yet the Scourge are still like the models ingame. Is there an obvious answer here? Yea, it's that they didn't want to show an actual decapitated head.

But! Perhaps it's because of the nature of the Scourge. Take a look at these guys.

Concept Art for Cataclysm, never made it ingame.

Zuraal here is obviously a lot more Void-Like, but you can see how the Broken were changed by the Void too. Shapewise, we see some similarities.

Could this be because of the nature of reanimation through Dark Magic such as the Void? Which we know is tied to the Scourge already.

Are the souls being ripped back through the Void in an uncaring way, thus ripping apart their form, and re-emerging into reality as grotesque husks?
    Thoughts?

Plague of Undeath that Lich King used was made by Dreadlords.
Dreadlords have been known to commune with Old Gods and generally anyone that can give them power and knowledge.

It is not beyond possibility that some aspects or knowledge from the Void was used in making of the Plague of Undeath that created the scourge.

it was conjured by ner'zhul, not dreadlord. it is even heavily hinted in wod that it derive from the spores of some type of primals so actually it is a corruption of a nature "energy" to undeath.

I think Chronicle mentioned that Gul'dan and Cho'gall infused the death knights with void magic, so necromancy could be another branch of the same tree.
Never mind, just looked it up. Necromancy falls in the Death category, which is a separate cosmic force from the Void.

On another note, the artist should have put dead citizens there instead of those goofy-looking ghouls. Would have had much more impact.

vivianne mission, the forsaken body guard in wod

and anyway these spores act exactly like common necromancy, to the point that laughing skulls burn their dead (exatly like in numerous missions against scourge/forsaken)

Naxxramas had a quarter with a lot of mutations, fungus grows wild in plageued places, plague eruptors and geists have some strange mutations as well - I think that death magic simly have some mutagenic properties in itself.
