I'll go with what @Skroe has said on this:

The first expedition to Mars should be in the name of all mankind.

The second should be in the name of Article four section 3 of the US Constitution.

So, the first Martian state of the US? New Ares

You can't actually claim a planet. Even if you are first on it. It's the quickest way to get yourself or your new colony promptly nuked.

The most likely situation for any colony on Mars will be that it will be a multi-national venture, specific assets placed on the planet will be owned by various private and entities (subject to the laws of the nations where they are registered) and or government entities. People will remain subject to the laws and governance of the nations they are citizens of.

This is a sufficient arrangement for anything research sized. Once you establish something akin to a permanent settlement people will likely continue inheriting the citizenship of their nations of origin or administration and law enforcement will be passed down to some sort of international entity and moving there will require you to contractually accept arbitration in its courts, similar to how international waters work.

It has to be something super epic sounding to excite people for mars. Ares is a good one.

Well realistically, it will have to be something very PC/global unless an EU or US or joint team basically does 90% of the heavy lifting. Columbia might have been a good name but no way now because of some of the atrocities he committed. If there is a failed mars manned mission where the crew dies it might be named after the hero of that mission? If there is a big female hero that is pivotal so early mars activities that would be a good candidate. Maybe some native american/Chinese/australian aborigine name for hope, sanctuary, or unknown or something that has a nice ring to it (very kumbaja), Wakanda (rofl jk, but I liked the movie so I'm not racist), and another really strong candidate that sort of circles to a likely eu/us centric mission is the some random latin word like freedom/hope etc.

You can claim what you can hold, if the US is the only country able to get to and colonize Mars we can take what we want, that being said it's a big planet and colonization won't happen over night. And nuking the US would end poorly for everyone for obvious reasons.

A dusty, barren, backwater hellscape devoid of human culture? New Australia seems fitting.
