Sure. But I never said it has not been. That does not change the fact that torture is a violation of human rights that we are supposed to uphold as a nation... not only when it suits our needs, like the examples you used.

The unfortunate thing, is that these principles are always discarded when it comes to real on the ground situations. WW2 has long been considered as the 'last good war' by many, and that war was replete with examples of heinous human rights violations on the side of the 'good guys'. And these violations were not limited to the well known big ones, like killing hundreds of thousands of civilians by targeting population centers for fire bombing. These violations also include many examples of torture, mass executions of prisoners of war, unrestricted submarine warfare in the pacific (sinking ships and then surfacing and machine gunning any survivors, often times non-combatant merchant shipping crews).

Why is it that these supposed ideals only matter up until the point where its convenient to violate them? I think this is just a holdover from the cold war, where propaganda like this was used to portray one side as the absolute 'good guys'.

Honestly believe Tillerson when he says he didn't know ahead of time. Besides the fact that he contradicted the white house about Russia, his firing served as a good distraction from both the PA special elections today and the news from yesterday about Mueller wrapping up the part of his investigation looking into whether Trump obstructed justice or not.

Good riddance. He was Secretary of State in name only at this point, and agreed to be among the worst in American history. Donald Trump hires only the best people.

It will take many years to recover from what his 14 months of terrible management at the state department accomplished, which saw the foreign service basically mass resign rather than work under him and Trump.

The best part of this is that the new Director of the CIA is going to be a 30 year vet, and will do well to preserve the agency from Trump's Russia-hugging illegitimacy and malfeasance. It's a shame that going from the hapless Tillerson to the compromised Pompeo, means the State Department, the one organ of the US government that is most focused on restraint, will take years to get back on its feet.

In other words, all hail our new de-facto Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis.
