Even if someone's died, if they leave such an impact to help us grow and understand as a society, then they achieved something great.

People still look up to Einstein despite how long ago he died, because he left so much for us to learn from. Dr Hawkings did the same, and I'm certain he would always be happy knowing people learned from him. That's the best we can do to honor him.

Well, it's sad but 76 is pretty much a full life, so living as long as he did is kind of an accomplishment all of its own.

Not to diminish his contributions to Physics, but he's not really "an Einstein". Einstein (and others) revolutionised all of physics, Hawking just expanded on it.

Fair enough. Hawking and Einstein would of been best pals, I doubt it really matters, but to most people he was like the modern day Einstein, though their contributions are not entirely equal they both should not be diminished but admired at the same level.
