The last movie I saw was The Conjuring 2. I really enjoyed it. There are a few scenes that really got to me if anyone is looking for something that is scary.

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard - 4/10: This flick feels like it was written by someone semi-competent, abandoned, and then picked up by someone else just to finish. The main premise is incredibly dumb, and while there's some rippers in here, most of the jokes just come across as awkward and not funny in the slightest.

    Frost / Nixon:
8/10: Excellent acting and pacing, though I did not get to see the entire movie (only caught the last half). One of the better flicks I've seen in recent months.

    Wind River (2017) - 7/10

A slow moving but well execute story driven mystery. Great setting. Great cast. Solid acting across the board, except a couple times with Olsen. Well worth the watch if you like mysteries.

    Annihilation (2018): 8/10

It seemed like I was watching a poor man's Tarkovsky movie. Let me just say how great it felt realizing I was going into a heady sci fi for once, albeit all the spoonfeeding at the end... The premise is interesting, but it kinda lacks on the unpredictable department. The visuals are great and lush though, despite it being all cgi. The unnaturality of computer generated crap actually works wonders on a movie like this.

    Atomic Blonde (2017) - 4/10

Normally I shy away from being negative in a harsh way, but.... this movie was fucking horrible. There were, however, some positive points:
    1. Pretty solid production overall.
    2. Some of the action scenes were entertaining, some. Part of the issue I had with this film was how many and how often there were ridiculous fight scenes. Felt like the producers were trying to make a spy version of John Wick.
    3. A couple good songs on the sound track.

    Strangers: Prey At Night 7/10

Terrific direction and cinematography. Perfect use of just about every filming technique and a script of pure gold. Every scene advances the plot, every scenario ups the ante. This is lean, tight, simple and effective filmmaking. It only lacks originality- one could say the movie is 'textbook' and be spot on. This is textbook, so to speak, which is also the limitation as the film doesn't strive to up end any notions you might have about it's framing or commentary. It's sorta vapid actually. But that's okay in the context of the artistic intent.

    Thoroughbreds 7/10

Another terrifically directed film. A lot of hubbub on the film makes the comparison to Heathers, but this is far closer to the sardonic side of Kubrick. Immaculate framing and use of non-diegetic sound, fantastic costuming and art direction.

The performances are pretty good too but the supporting cast is pretty one dimensional. So are the leads, to be fair, but at least that is the point of Taylor-Joy and Cooke's characters. I think the film would have been a little more effective if the world surrounding the leads was contrasted with the isolated lives of the girls.

Also, the shot of Ana Taylor-Joy eating peas with a fork one at a time center frame is masterful.

    That's film making, baby.

    Black Panther 4/10

    Soulless dull and regurgitated.

Amazingly undeveloped characters. I felt T’Challa was the same character from the first scene to the last. The antagonist seemed to be playing a sarcastic parody of what white people think a black guy sounds like? Awful disjointed fractured story that offered no sympathy for the characters. The same old SAME OLD Marvel cliche of having the hero fight a villain that is exactly the same as he is. In fact it’s worse in this film, as it’s a simple tint change on their uniform.

Struggling to think a worse superhero film.

The only positive was to watch Letitia Wright. Genuinely entertaining!

    Annihilation (2018) - 5/10

Acting was fine. Production was solid. Special effects were ok. The story was kind of boring and the scary/suspenseful scenes tended to be underwhelming. At the closing credits I was thinking to myself "ooookay".

Struck me as a new/modern twist on the invasion of the body snatchers story.

    Edit:
A few scenes made me think of The Last of Us. A few times I thought for sure the suspense was building up to the appearance of a clicker.

Black Panther. 6.5/10 = Good movie, nowhere near the hype.

Was pretty, had some good Action scenes but the story was overall fairly dull and the main Villain was the worst that has been in the MCU, the Mandarin in Ironman 3 was more enjoyable.

Black Panther 5/10. It had all the flash you'd expect but this time around the goofiness of a Marvel comic movie bothered me rather than entertaining me like it should. I was checked out even before the armored rhinoceros attack.

The Shape of Water - 6.5/10
I can see why it won best picture it just didn't deserve it. Production wise it was very well done, and it was reasonably well acted. However, not much else about it was very good. The story was far too paint by numbers, and the characters themselves were generally cartoonish stereotypes. I think it was also trying too hard to be edgy.

I might give it a second viewing but I was kind of disappointed overall.

I'm 7 mins into Star Wars The Last Jedi on second monitor while prepping to do some work.

Do you guys know what this movie is missing, for me? A movie theater full of simpletons laughing at these retarded jokes and being excited about cliche action, where something goes wrong at the last second, and the hero says one liners/jokes to convey his enthusiasm. (Even though the situation should actually be super dire and intense.) Not to mention this shit feels EXACTLY the same as stuff from the previous movies. I mean, even X-Men had like 15 movies and the plots were a bit different.

What a piece of shit movie. I feel insulted, honestly. I'm not sure if this movie is legitimately aimed at < 13 year old kids or what. I'm gonna watch the other fucking 2h 25m of this movie, but I just couldn't help but make a quick post to show my disappointment. I hope things pick up and get more serious.

33 mins in. I literally keep pausing the movie because my jaw is dropped in stunned disbelief of how generic, cliche, and over the top this movie is. There's literally like every single troupe of "let's have the audience laugh/awe/be amazed/say "ohhhhhhh"/be surprised" every 30 seconds. The heroes survive the impossible because of ??????????????? Not even story plot armor, just ??????????????? Every scene is a "omg look at these cool fucking scene switches of lasers and robots and fighting and explosions and action and comedy".

This movie is pure trash. This is Transformers level. It's literally "hey we've got a big blockbuster budget with some good IP, let's make the most generic audience friendly movie that makes no sense at all but has a lot of cliche moments." There's no fluidity in these scenes. I actually think a group of 7th graders could write a better movie than this.

I actually have more respect for stupid TV movies that are really bad than I do for Star Wars. Not even joking. Not even being "oh haha that's Blueobelisk and his dumb rating system." This movie is so bad.

  15. #12395
....it doesn't really get much better...just stop now...

I have to watch it guys, it's too big in pop culture for me to not watch it. Like Frozen. People just assume you've seen it.

1h 5m in. I'm gonna start marking all the stupid shit I see as I see it. If you guys find one of these points to be believable or possible in the Star Wars movie context, then please explain it to me so I don't feel like a hater.

    >Jedi training: Sit on a rock and feel stuff. How long does it take? Happens immediately after we both jump out of character and act like jackasses.
    >Better throw in some cute chickens with Chewbacka to make all the kids go awe.
    >Casino scene. Yeah let's have Finn be amazed and excited even though he should be on a mission to save the resistance and Rey.
    >Dark side of the force - some hole in the ground.
    >Most skilled code breaker - Happens to decide to break of jail out the second he overhears cellmates. No guards see him.
    >Chinese kamikaze girl in the beginning - Better kick this ladder all dramatic style to get this remote trigger.
    >Chinese girl's sister (with half of a fucking pendant omg such symbolism) - "Disney said we needed to up the diversity even more in this movie so I'm a new main character. I think next movie we're getting some indian people."
    >The force - Now lets you speak with your enemies and see what they see. From probably literally light years away.
    >Also, this bitch who has had no Jedi training, but is a main character so she's the only one whose body doesn't get destroyed in an explosion, wakes up from being in the vacuum of space and Forces her way to a spaceship. Has anyone else ever done this before? Nah but while we're making up shit let's give her that power.

The cliche is beyond ridiculous with the shit I'm not mentioning, btw. "We're gonna run out of fuel. Steady course *dread face*"

Guess I should review a movie to be OT.....

Ummm whats the movies all the kids watch these days...oh i know

    BLACK PANTHER - 6/10.

Only marvel movie in the theater so its the only movie ive seen all year. IT WAS AWESOME BLACK PANTHER WAS SO COOL

    >The tiny robot with no arms ties up 3 prison guards.
    >Omg how cute the coins are weapons. How did all those coins fit inside that tiny robot? Movie magic.
    >Kid slaves, war, mistreatment of animals, selling weapons. Why? Because the bad guys have to be evil. If not, then the good guys couldn't have tragic backstories.

SHE TWISTED HER RING TO SHOW A SYMBOL AND THE SLAVE KIDS BELIEVE SHE'S FROM THE RESISTANCE. That ring looks like it's from a cereal box. OMEGALUL.

    >Oh yes. These poor slave animals now get their freedom, so they trounce all over the big bad casino and scare the rich aristocratic baddies.
    >What kind of movie would this be if we didn't include a chase/racing scene? You thought the space ship fighting was it? Gtfo, we need to show you we're masters of every movie troupe.

    >"Hey thief. Yeah it's cool how we got out of the jail cell at literally the same time, and we had a rampaging group of space horses to get us here. But you found our robot, hijacked a plane, found us, and had enough time to show up all cool style to save us? Awesome."

    >Luke "closed himself off from the Force". Such painful memories. So sad.
    >But damn, this rock has powers. The second he touched it, it woke Laya up from her coma. That Force be magical.

Yo is this Rey chick supposed to be in Tomb Raider or something? Wtf is with her accent.

She fell into an underground cave to go exploring. Maybe she is Lara Croft lol...

    >"Let me see my parents in this mirror." I'm pretty sure they stole that from Harry Potter...

Man angry emo teen guy and Rey are becoming best friends, eh? They can't stop Force Skyping with each other. But I guess 2 days alone with a Jedi Master who has been teaching her every day (and some animals she keeps fucking over) would make anyone lonely.

    >Soft moment where they connect. Luke better show up right now to yell and somehow blow up the house. Oh yeah it's raining and tense now btw. Feel that tension out of nowhere audience. And that ominous background music too. We really know how to transition between scenes and make you feel what we want you to feel.

Why the fuck is she attacking him. ???????????????????????????????????????????????

    She saw his future. Okay..........

To be honest, the story (told from like 4 perspective's piece by piece) or Luke/Kylo Ren's moment of conflict was told pretty well. Not the framing device, but the actual moment itself and each perspective...

Yoda eh? This wouldn't be a complete movie without cameo appearances, amirite?

So he lives alone on an island for 20 years, but he has a blowtorch....k...

Did the ghost just summon lightning from the clouds LUL? Oh yeah the rain is gone. It was so heavy though. I guess Disney wants us to feel something different now, so the weather changes (with no logic behind it, of course).

????????????? So a forest fire somehow created an explosion to push Luke back dramatically so he can watch shit burn. Makes NO sense, but okay...

    >Sacred Jedi text. "Yeah that girl with no training who you told to sit on a rock? She knows everything already. Oh those animals who kept this island safe for 1000s of years? OMEGALUL fuck their jobs."

Alright 1:24/2:31. I'll watch more later or tomorrow or something. It wasn't SO bad the past like 12 minutes but...It's still awful.

I'm just trying to understand how like 70% of the people in this thread gave it 5-9 ratings. It's just so bad. I want someone to tell me that I'M the wrong one and these things that I think are gaping flaws are actually okay. Okay in terms of "it's okay if movies do this" or "its okay because this is canon/logical in the Star Wars universe."

Looking at my posts, I might've went overboard....but that's because there were so many issues...

Alright alright I'm done pointing out flaws. When I rate this movie -1/10 later, don't tell me that I'm an asshole hater whose mean for the sake of it and my rating system sucks. I laid down evidence. /over for now

You wouldnt be the first person to not like it. Most of the stuff you're saying you could just as easily say about your so called masterpiece pacific rim. Like "cliche" big budget action stuff.

The most stupid thing about the last jedi imo was the finn/rose B story on the casino planet. All that could have been cut

    Annihilation - 7/10

Honestly very impressed by Natalie Portman's acting. I knew she was a famous actress and probably won tons of awards, but I didn't expect her to be so good in this.

The story was very predictable but not horrible. Anyone with basic biological knowledge will roll their eyes at much of the contents. The ending was as obvious as they come. Completely telegraphed and obvious. I'd rate it lower, but I liked the visuals and acting a lot. Maybe for people that didn't pay attention in biology class the premise and story was more compelling.
