Half the country thinks he's a treasonous blowhard who went to the Russians for help winning an election, who's under the thumb of Putin because of kompromat. The last thing this feckless moron needs is to make statements that makes him look even more like a stooge of Vladimir Putin.

Basically the president of the US is known by those around him to be incapable of doing the right thing unless specifically instructed, but clearly even that wasn't enough in this case. Nixxon was caught 4 years after he began the watergate wire tapping, and 2 years after the investigation into it started. High profile cases typically take a long time, and Nixxon's example isn't the only one. Trump keeps acting like a person, constantly trying to impede the investigation, rather than simply letting it run its course. If he believes himself innocent, he wouldn't be trying to stop the investigation non stop.

People don't always get caught soon after their crime, and your logic about everything has always been faulty. Sometimes guilty people act guilty, and congratulate another dictator on their win in an "election" that was a farce.

President Trump did not follow specific warnings from his national security advisers when he congratulated Russian President Vladi*mir Putin Tuesday on his reelection, including a section in his briefing materials in all-capital letters stating “DO NOT CONGRATULATE,” according to officials familiar with the call.

Washington Post reporting that Trump's own advisers told him not to congratulate Putin, going as far as to write it down in all caps as can be seen in the quote above. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a resignation or two over this, it's like why bother advising someone who will completely blow you off like that.
