I simply struggle to understand why a game with a box price needs micro-transactions. At the very least they should trash loot boxes and just let players buy what they want directly instead of gambling.

I don't consider them micro-transactions because you don't have to buy lootboxes to get these items, you get a lootbox everytime you level and you can buy specific items with the gold you accumulate along the way, other games have two forms of currencies where you are forced to buy an item you really want, this one doesnt. They did a good job with that overall, you complaining about it is just stupid.

The Winston skin is super lame (why is that legendary quality) but I like all the others. Maybe not more than some existing skin but enough that I want them.

Reaper skin is one of the best, it has a Commander Morrison vibe in it. Sombra, Doomfist and Moira are even at Rank 2, yet the others are underwhelming in comparison in term of badassness. Speaking of which, Zarya's new highlight ("Graviton Surge") is both epic and evil (just...look at her face when she throws the grav !).

What's your favourite new voiceline introduced in Archives ? Mine would be Pharah's " I live for a good fight", Rehgar's blood flows within her ! xD

The gambling aspect is what allows Activision let Blizzard release free content. If everything was direct to buy, every new content update would be paid DLC.

I would be inclined to agree with you, IF they were available permanently. By releasing new skins with limited windows regularly Blizz ensures that it is practically impossible for someone who doesn't buy extra boxes to get all the skins they want.

As a free to play collector this actually is not true since the box updates. I consistently collect every skin that I really want and the vast majority of the others. I also get every epic and under item guaranteed.

I am getting the new player experience with this event though as I missed it last year so I am interested if this holds true. I did make sure to save up 7k tokens just in case though so it has a high chance of still remaining true.

If anything, it's more likely a BIG patch for Overwatch. They won't make Overwatch 2 so soon given their history. Took them many years to make Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3.

Moira though, now that one I need. I don't like any of her other skins sadly, but this one is incredible.

It should be pretty possible to get all the skins you want for 1-2 heroes if you play the game for an hour or two on average every day. I still have a bronze border and I have never bought a single box, but I have every single skin including event skins and excluding league skins for 2 heroes. Now that they changed the box RNG to avoid duplicates, once you have unlocked all the white and blue things you get a pretty steady income from leveling boxes.

I am the first person to point out the sly corporate greed that drives much if not most of Blizzard's game design and that goes over the heads of most idiot Blizzard fans, but Overwatch is definitely an exception. OW is Blizzard's new golden child and they were very careful and delicate in designing the micro-transactions in this game; even I find it very optional and non-invasive. At the very least I can easily see how they could have been far greedier and no one would have batted an eyelash. Not to mention they recently came out with a large number of 1k skins with unique art that they really did not have to do.

I think Blizzard wants OW to sell copies and gain momentum with younger generations, not squeeze every last penny out of an aging fanbase like they do with most of their other games. I can't say all because Hearthstone for example is a game where Blizzard took some risks and pushed greed as far as they dared with great success and without deterring the fanbase.
