My concern with the Patriots is Brady is a year older, a tad slower, bones are a little less supple.

And his offensive line is even more of a revolving door, and for all of Brady's strengths, Big Ben Houdini level antics are not one of them.

It's not me counting him out by any means, but the longer he remains in the NFL behind that wet toilet paper of a line, he's going to get hit hard.

I'm still furious over the Josh Allen pick, and it's been weeks. Everyone in Buffalo is like, "Well, miracles happen, right? Maybe? Come on, man!"
    Like, the Music City Miracle?

    Sorry.

Here in Buffalo, we call that one "The Immaculate Deception."

So! The Supreme Court struck down a law that forbade sports betting outside of Nevada. It's possible individual states can now pass laws legalizing gambling. That's pretty nice, I guess.

Well, sports gambling is legal in every state in the US now. Wonder how the NFL will respond to this.

    Like this.

Not too worried about the pro leagues. If corruption occurs, it's more likely to occur at the college level. Seems like it would be easier to buy players at that level.

Not true. It's simply no longer banned on a federal level. Individual states will still need to legalize it. As of right this second, it's still only legal in Nevada. It will be legal in NJ and Delaware within a couple weeks. Other states, months, years, and in some cases never.

My question is: who're the states who're not going to legalize it? It's free money, if they make it state-regulated.

Washington wont until they figure out how to use it to fund homeless people.

Someone tweeted out today something along the lines of "remember when we used to get those awful Draftkings ads every single ad break durign games?" and I'm already hating what's going to happen, cause that's exactly what will happen with this sportsbetting too. Companies will try to corner the budding new market by throwing masses of advertising around, meanign we are stuck watching betting commercials every game.

    Yuck.

There has to be a uniform line, somewhere. Someone was talking today on Buffalo sports radio about how the line can't be set by individual teams, because home crowds will want to bet their team and push the line into unreasonableness. Then, it becomes a better deal to bet AGAINST a team with its own sportsbook. Which would be kind of hilarious.

So then, what's the solution? Does the NFL set up its own book, run by Vegas handicappers who now become League handicappers? As long as all the teams abide by that book, I don't see the problem. Then, independent books can rise up of their own accord, say one for Buffalo sports (Bills, Sabres, Bisons) and one for New England sports (Patriots, Bruins, Celtics, Red Sox), and take more standard action for everything else. But then, who sets the line on the "standard action"? Vegas? A new national Gaming office?

I can see why the NFL and the NBA today called for Congress to put in some sort of federal regulatory framework. Which the decision today allows for, it just finds unconstitutional the outright ban of gambling.

We keep getting "no" votes on a lottery, I doubt gambling will be any different.

No offense, but is the problem with this. In most other countries betting has been legal since forever, with certain restrictions on who is allowed to hold betting events (mostly to protect against fraud and such).

With this suddenly becoming a thing in the US, and the US habit of turning everything new into a marketing and business frenzy, this could get seriously ugly.

There's VERY strict rules in my country about being able to advertize gambling. The US has none of those at the moment. IT's the wild wild west, and there's going to be quite a few people with gambling traits suddenly exposed to this with massive ad campaigns and constant exposure with no laws to protect them.

But yeah, I totally see what you mean, and I can totally see it happen. It's pretty damn sad.

Texas, cause Oklahoma lobbies hard so that we have to gamble in Oklahoma

I'm actually shocked that you couldn't bet on sports in the US.

  20. #1120
You could, only in specific places though. Namely Nevada, where Las Vegas is, but places like Atlantic City in NJ had exemptions too.

For a long time people worried a great deal about match fixing and fraud in sports. I think with the lessened influence of organized crime these days, it's not that much of a concern any more. Boxing, in particular, used to be rife with those sorts of problems.
