Swedish man charged with complicity in 2015 Paris terror attacks

French anti-terror judges charged a Swedish man on Monday with complicity in the 2015 Paris attacks that left 130 people dead, over allegations he played a key role in the jihadist cell behind the carnage.
Osama Krayem, a 25-year-old of Swedish citizen of Syrian origin, has been in custody in Belgium since his arrest in Brussels in April 2016 and was charged after being transferred to France for the day.

He was also charged with attempted murder and sequestration.

Investigators also accuse Krayem of being part of the cell that carried out the 2016 Brussels bombings which left 32 people dead and like the Paris attacks were claimed by the Islamic State group.

Krayem is suspected of buying the bags used for the Brussels attacks and was caught on CCTV minutes before one of the blasts with suicide bomber Khalid El Bakraoui, both carrying huge backpacks.

Krayem failed to go through with his suicide attack.

Like other members of the cell, Krayem travelled to Syria after 2014 before apparently hiding himself among migrants in order to return to Europe from Syria in 2015.

Two years after his arrest, questions remain over Krayem's true role in the attacks. Questioned repeatedly in Belgium, he has denied any role in the Paris attacks and in making bombs.

Traces of Krayem's DNA were found in several hideouts in Belgium used by the Paris attackers, in particular the place used to make the explosive belts used in the Paris attacks.

Okay, so even if we go into the technical distinction between the two (which I'm not even sure has practical application in Sweden, most EU countries tend to legally consider all nationals citizens, and all citizens nationals if they're of age), how does being "just" a citizen not make them "Swedish"?

Because possessing citizenship does not mean you meet qualifiers to be a part of the respective nation.

"A nation is a stable community of people, formed on the basis of a common language, territory, economic life, ethnicity or psychological make-up manifested in a common culture."

Main factor in determining if someones nationality is Swedish is by ethnicity and then there is the Swedish by culture as well, neither of which this guy actually fits, because y'know, he's not ethnic swede and he's not culturally Swedish if he believes in Islam. Which would make his nationality distinctly not Swedish.

I am pretty sure most people know that not all muslims are bad. But I think that when you call these people Swedish you paint a bad picture of Swedes, and we don't need help with that. Immigration in Sweden is bad, even if not all immigrants are bad. Even though this guy was born in Sweden, his whole family is from Syria and most likely the area in Malmö(Worst place in sweden atm) where he lived the majority are immigrants and muslim. Because that how it works in Sweden, all immigrants are put in the same area. You don't even have to learn to speak swedish, signs will have arabic translations, arabic stores with halal, doctors and social workers that speak arabic and the list goes on. The difference between these immigrant heavy areas and the rest of swedish is huge. I live in one of the worst areas in my small town, most people will specifically ask not to show them homes in this area when they are searching for one because they refuse to live here. 8/10 of the people I see when I go outside the door are immigrants, many of them dont speak swedish or even english only the younger people do. But I know that 9/10 of these immigrants aren't bad people. But the other 1/10 is a big problem, and the swedish government is not doing anything about it. They don't wanna send people out of sweden, and even if they did they could just go back to sweden and apply for asylum here again. We had politicians offer ISIS members that return to Sweden to be promised an apartment and help.

But to get back to the issue with the article, when I read that title I get the impression that is was actually an ethnic swede that was involved in the terror attack. But it wasn't, it was a first generation immigrant. It is not the same thing. It's like when news said that "First man to be pregnant" I got really surprised, but then it turned out to be a transgender that was born as a woman and later decided that she wanted to live as a man. You can call her and treat her as a man, but that doesnt change the fact that she is a woman.

If you want to make arguments based on something subjective and other than law, like, say, race or ethnicity, that's your deal. It doesn't mean others can't call him "Swedish". If you want to specify you mean he isn't "ethnic Swedish", say that. Then others know right away what you're about.

I am always confused because people who scream islamophobia are also the ones screaming that terrorist attacks are not real islam. And... you know... it can't be both.
