Fake news. Liberal strongholds uphold all the red states except Texas. Thats why they're taxing us heavy because red state moochers are too silly to move outta farm areas and get real jobs.

I wonder why you never hear calls to split Texas up. Always gotta try and neuter the big bad liberal bastion state.

  3. #23
Are we splitting Florida and their electoral votes too?

I mean, this is driven by pure heart and not ideological political gamesmanship, right?

Not gonna happen. And even if voters in California approved it, it's against the US Constitution.

Article IV, Section 3, Clause 1: New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new States shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.

    See bolded.

Actually it's the 'Without the consent of state legislature or Congress' that's the important part, though congress would never agree to it.

I think that's what the ballot says.. they would begin the process for legislation.

    To quote that article:

"It's outrageous that we are literally subsidizing these moocher states – their roads, their bridges, their fire departments – all at the cost of helping ours," said Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-5th Dist.

This attitude is a huge part of America's problem. He's making it sound like the US is 50 different countries.

All three of the proposed states have a major metropolitan area that leans heavily democrat. If anything, this would provide four more reliably democrat senators, so quit your bitching.

Facts are facts. Republicans are shitting all over liberals for "mooching off welfare, helping others.. I DONT CARE ABOUT YOU, I TAKE CARE OF MINES!"

And... cut liberal support see how they like it.

Without Massachusetts (Boston), New York (NYC, 5 boroughs), NJ and California... republicans are fucked.

Also... don't bite the hand that feeds ya

I thought the very reason they were arguing for it was so that they could add a couple rural states that are all Republican, rather than the current vast majority being from urban regions and Democrat?

I mean, that's what a lot of people want it to be. People who are all 'State Rights' and 'Small Government' want their states to be treated as individual countries, separate from the rest, so that they can do whatever they want.

I disagree with them, but there are a lot that feel that way.

There will be a proposal on the ballot in California this November to split the state into three. Stuff like this gets floated fairly regularly (and not just for CA), but this would be the first time in 150 years that it is actually on the ballot for a vote.

I think this would be a good thing personally, to allow each region to better address their needs without being beholden to others. Politically I'd see Northern California and California staying blue with Southern California being red, which would also be a better representative dynamic.
Where do you live that you think Southern California is going red?

With the semi-colons and the way the sentence is structured and grammar is used, I think there are three different and distinct parts to that sentence.

They could honestly break California into over 20 states given the population size.

I doubt Congress will allow it though as it would give Democrats more power. With 3 states instead of 1, that is 4 more senators plus which is also an automatic 4 more votes in the electoral college.

Don't know enough to know how it will change representation in congress though, if anyone else wants to fill that in.

It would have been close enough for al gore to lose by a single EV. Though depending on how the population divides up they might lose or gain an EV

I hear this called for all the time. Texas, though, is highly against it. California seems to be up for a vote at least.

Anyway where are these poor areas your talking about? Just because you dont make 100K+ doesnt mean your poor. Also the rural areas dont need money because theres less people living there. So really the big cites are housing the poorest areas that need the tax support.

Pretty much. The problem is that these people are being shortsighted. The prosperous city of today could be the backwater of tomorrow, so it's in everyone's best interests if we pick up those lagging behind by their bootstraps, so that they can help us out when we're the ones in trouble.

We're far stronger as a species when we stand united; the day humanity figures that out is the day we finally start really getting shit done.

I believe they mean all the places that take in more tax dollars than they pay, basically, the welfare states which nationally tend to be Red states. Quite literally the ones who rail about Democrats spending other peoples money are the ones surviving by spending other peoples money because they refuse to pay enough taxes to fund their own government.
