does the +20% dmg buff to shadow word pain for shadow also affect the disc version of the spell or are they different spells?

They can be balanced independently.
But we won't know for sure until the patch hits on Tuesday/Wednesday. Maybe the -9% to Smite is also here to slightly compensate SWP buff.

I'm pretty sure they can buff spells independently for different specs but it would explain the unneccesary disc pve nerf.
