The game feels more alive than in the past 10 years put together. Thanks to Warmode in combination with WQs I see so many people in the world again.
I think the sharding have been a great system.

I have a great time doing WQs with warmode on. Being forced to run away or do the quests in the outskirts of the WQ zones from time to time, and other times (most times) I jump the alliance players as I see them. And sometimes big faction wars break out which is a lot of fun.
Rated PvP also feels fine so far, not the best state its ever been exactly, but Im quite enjoying the end of game rewards, chests and conquest rewards. I'd still prefer a vendor with the old conquest system, but I might come around.
Meanwhile my guild enjoys raiding and doing Mythic+ and stuff. Im a bit disappointed with Warfronts, was expecting.. more. Its well made, but it should have been singleplayer to make it longer.

And nearly all my friends started playing WoW again for the first time in 3+ years.

I got the Xpac and signed up for 6 months, but I don't see myself renewing after that. I come back for less and less time.

Me too. I bought 6 months for my two accounts because subscribe price here in Brazil was going to rise. I got baited hard. I'll just use my sub till January to farm as much gold as I can to buy Swift Zulian Tiger and Sha's mount + have a nice chunk of gold for the next expansion. Unless they introduce new gold missions from table, I'll quit when my sub expires.

While i agree that anecdotal evidence is hardly any measure at all; despite it being what you call so eloquently "everything being rainbows and puppies" the OP does nothing to source even the smallest part of his post.

I thought it was completely normal for sub numbers to bloat at the beginning of an expansion, then drop significantly after a month or two and then go back up again with the next major patch.

Overall I'm noticing nothing in game resembling a mass exodus. In the contrary, our guild hasn't been this active in years. The officers actually thought we'd need to open a second raid due to the number of people interested in raiding this time, but it topped out at exactly 30. The last couple expansions it was only around 20.

Cities are packed, plenty of people out and leveling in all ranges, so I'd say everything is looking pretty good so far.

While there's a couple things to complain about the game looks in pretty good shape to me.

it used to be wow only increased, or rather mroe people joined than left. Oh how times have changed

This has not been my experience. I see lots of posts like this in forums, but can't think of a single in-game friend or guild mate who has stopped playing.
