Men just jumped at the thought, seeing as how we're primates and many primates do indeed have the structure where a male needs to fight his way to the top and constantly be conquering the opposite sex/other males.

There are no "alpha male" humans. There aren't even alpha wolves.

And the role of an alpha male in most animals where they DO reside, is never about the male just kicking back and being so secure in himself that he can never be challenged. They're constantly challenged, and in the end they'll be booted off the top by one of those challengers, or die trying to keep the title.

In fact, I'd argue that THAT is an "Alpha male" by human standard. A male so insecure in his position that he must always bluster and show off in order to secure whatever he does have. Not very flattering, in any case.
