Obsidian would have died without the fictional dead by being bought my Microsoft. Not like Obsidian was swimming in cash (or they wouldn't need to do a kickstarter) for that matter.

In-depended developers only work if the developer can develop a smashing hit to the scale of a Witcher 3 or a GTA 5 (take-two founded Rockstar). Obsidian does not own a mainstream IP that manages to sell well 3 or 4 years after release.

Also your final point is a contradiction. If a developer isn't developing games that do well they will be shut down regardless if they are in-depended or not. At least now they have a chance to develop games and as long as they deliver quality Obsidian does not have to worry about money.

OK, so with all the chatter about Foundation, this seems like an interesting point.

To say that the setting covers a good span of time is an understatement...

but in the broadest strokes, its very Fallout-ish. Foundation's story is almost entirely following the events after the collapse of the "galactic empire" when technology and such are effectively lost. (except for the library/planet/ark)

So yeah, while its anyone's guess what type of game genres this will fall into, this could be the "Not Fallout"-Fallout IP they need.

I still dream of a day where they held on to the rights to make a Wheel of Time game and went through with it.

Mildly excited for whatever this might be, though! I think they struggle with original IPs but the talent is definitely there when they have a solid foundation to work off of.

My faith in obsidian lowered a bit after pillars of eternity 2. But if the premise is right and looks interesting enough I'll at least think about it.

No, we are in a gaming renaissance.

Stop relying on shit companies that have turned shit a long time ago to turn it around and find the games that actually are great. There are plenty of them, more so then any other time period.

New trailer. Haven’t had chance to watch it or read anything about it besides it being a first person RPG and that it’ll be on all platforms.

    this looks interesting.

one of the youtubers i watched pointed out that people are saying it "looks like obsidian beat bethesda to starfield", and you know that kinda makes me wonder a bit.

obsidian worked with bethesda to make new vegas, what if their earliest concepts of starfield was leaked to an obsidian dev by a bethesda dev during their new vegas development? bethesda had been working on a space rpg prior to marrowind, so maybe the very very early concepts of starfield were being talked about during that time.

Eh, I have doubts. That’d probably bring some huge legal risks if they based this game on Bethesda’s early Starfield Design Documents. Wouldn’t it be classed as corporate espionage or something?

Yep and that's why there is no chance of that being the case at all.

Its very safe to say Microsoft dot their I's and crossed their T's before buying Obsidian. I will say I am way more interested in this then anything Bethesda is putting out.

yeah, that's what i was thinking.

the name starfield didn't start to pop up until around 2014 though, right? so, if a beth dev did leak it to one of the obsidian devs, they could have pitched it as their own idea to the higher ups, and they wouldn't have any clue of bethesda actually working on starfield itself.

they get monumental cred if the game's good, nobody ever knows where the idea came from, and now bethesda got beaten to the genre by a company that is seen as their superiors.

so is this gonna be another open world game? ugh are we NOT over that yet? First person im down with. Games where you can spend hundreds of hours due to having no direction and minimal story coupled with a completionist ocd compulsion suck imo.

Im a little mixed atm. Im kinda glad obsidian doesn't feel bound by isometric view style too much, and tries something pretty new (ignoring New Vegas), which is great.

On the other hand im not sure how hyped i am for what seems to be yet another "open world"-esque single character RPG.

Good timing, since F76 is failing - should open up for some potential costumers looking for a new RPG.

I doubt Microsoft will do anything bad for this project, perhaps some big-corp management will help the QA.

Against my better judgement and common sense, I am so freaking hyped for this thing. Looks like a weird amalgamation of Fallout, Cyberpunk, Borderlands, Destiny and No Mans Sky, makes no sense, and yet feels like it's going to be awesome.

Still, it's really weird that Bethesda, CDP and now Obsidian are doing open-world space FPP RPGs at the same time. Is this some sort of a contest?

Whelp, Bethesda is failing quite horrifically lately. It’s the perfect time for someone to take their place as the go-to for first person open world games.

If Outer Worlds is as moddable as the Fallout franchise then we’re in for a real treat.

Apocalyptic and Fantasy have been done to death. Next logical step for Open World was either Cyberpunk or Sci-fi.

Honestly surprised there hasn't been a Warhammer 40k type one yet.

To be fair, its not like there is abundance of (mainstream) RPG settings. You have fantasy (done to death), post apo and Sci-fi.

Even more surprising given that games workshop seems to be giving their license left and right.
