The russo brothers had the unique challenge of cramming in all these heroes, so obviously you dont have much time to set up the characters like you normally would in a movie and their motivations. And because people had already seen the characters and that work had been done, they could get away with running with it from the start and can just bust out the squidward quips

Its a unique film because theres never really been such a connected universe in cinema before where you can expect people watching will already understand these characters

And that is one of the best parts of the film. Its not intended to be standalone. Its like watching Kill Bill and wondering why there is no dramatic character depth or watching the Jazz Singer and wondering why there is sound. The movies are intended to be that way and the audience should know that going into it, even based on the title "Avengers 3".

you're wrong. Infinity Wars was my first film of the MCU that I watched and I understood it completly. Understood who were the bad guys and the good guys. Understood the plot and some of the references. After that I watched ALL MCU movies just to understand what happened before that led to the events of the IW, but not because I didn't understand the movie

well dont get me wrong, you dont need an engineering degree to understand the plot.

Still the big moments are not gonna land quite as well without the backstory.

Why should you care who cap is when he turns up in infinity war? Or why should we care about thor who has the big heroic moment?

They don’t “spill half the beans” in any of their other trailers and I haven’t found those underwhelming.

The Infinity War trailer alone spilled the beans on:
- Thanos' forces invading New York
- Asgardian civilians dying
- Spiderman donning the Iron Spider suit
- Wakanda being the location of the final battle
- Loki delivering the Space Stone to Thanos (un)willingly
- Which characters are going to meet eachother and team up.

The Endgame trailer spills the beans on:
- Hawkeye becoming Ronin
- Scott getting out of the Quantum Realm

That's it. The rest is left under wraps.

Endgame gives you nothing. Just what happened and that the characters want to set it right.

I agree with you. And I also like this trailer because of that. Sure there is no "OMFG AWESOME!!!" moment in this trailer. But it doesn't have to, it is just the first trailer out of MANY.
