No, they are not. Subdued means lowkey, mellow, restrained. Underwhelming is something disappointing or lacking in impact.
Something subdued CAN be underwhelming but something bombastic can also be underwhelming. They are not synonyms.

My bet is Lang gets out of the QR in one of those time vortex things, but does a short time jump into the future. That's why they are surprised he showed up. I would bet its been months and figured they would have heard from him long before if he survived the snap. So they assumed he didn't make it.

My guess is either the surviving half of the Asgardians (more Korg, Miek, and Valkyrie!).... or Captain Marvel comes across them on her way back to Earth answering Fury's distress call (arguably the more likely of these two scenarios).

I think its interesting that they really didnt show us much of the world. I assume there would be a lot of social unrest, looting, mad max type shit going on with 1/2 the people just gone. The whole world would grind to a stop right?
