It was not a parody at all. It was a Spiderman film through and through.

Good animation is neither cheap nor easy. Especially not stylized animation that requires a great deal of compositing and effects work, like this one.

And suffice to say, the movie was absolutely fantastic from top to bottom. They certainly didn't make a "cash grab" film in any sense of the word.

But don't take my word for it:

    https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/spi...e_spider_verse

282 positive critic reviews. Versus 8 negative critic reviews.

    https://www.metacritic.com/movie/spi...e-spider-verse

Rated "must see" and "universal acclaim" on metacritic.

Now I wont mince words; this is not some "grimdark spiderman" full of angst and blood and guts. But the film does not pull its punches when it comes to things like death, family drama and dark subject matter. It just chooses to deal with those things in a decidedly adult way, instead of a dark and gritty edgelord way. (Something they actually poke fun at in one point in the film.)

So I suppose if you're expecting dark and brooding (and for some reason see spiderman as the posterboy of that,) don't go see it.

The way movie dealt with dark themes is exactly the way I like the see it done in movies. It felt organic and not for shock value or 'we' re going to do Spiderman but dark'.

The amount of guns and portrayal of Prowler probably fave them a hard time when it came keep the PG rating.

Hell, really hope Glover ends up getting to do Prowler is MCU Spiderman.

    I concur.

People seem to confuse "violent and grim" for "adult" way too easily, coupled with a supposition that Animation is "for kids only." So they discount movies like this as being "kid's stuff" and write off the rest of it without appreciating it from a storytelling or character standpoint.

Then, when a film has light-hearted parts and doesn't feature some Sin City-level violence they see it as confirmation of their opinions and dismiss it as "not being reflective of the true nature of the comic."

I could still see the people I addressed earlier in this thread seeing the movie and coming back in a huff about "how it wasn't TRUE SPIDERMAN" for the reasons I enumerated above.

Spider-man's story is a little dark to begin with. Peter Parker's beloved uncle dies because of his foolishness. Its a hard lesson to learn but he ends up choosing a moral path for himself. As opposed to Batman whose behaviour is entirely selfish.

Miles learns two lesson's about death. That's a bit dark in itself but its portrayed in a way that's not too tough for kids.

Show you refuse to watch 7 Spider-man movies because of a 25 year old cartoon?

I watched the movie. It did not ruin my childhood after growing up on watching the original 60's series and Spider-man and His Amazing Friends.

I will admit that after watching the first X-men movie I was very disappointed that Wolverine did not offer anyone fruit.

I wish Warcraft lore would do it that way more often.

OT: movie was so cool, enjoyed it, going to see it again with my partner

If you haven't seen it, go, I don't think anyone in the xillenial generation range would hate it.

I like how it hinted that Aunt May might have dated Liv at some point in that universe.

Is this movie forcing politics or is it true to its source?

Definitely forcing politics, based on a character created by Marvel's arch-SJW. It will probably destroy your childhood and slap you in the face.

For the sort of people who worry about something "forcing politics" having female and/or non-white versions of a superhero is forced politics.

I don't care about having black people or women (married to one) etc, but having them and then constantly talking how females are strong too and making it the plot is what I would called forced politics. You see I'm way past that, and would like the plot to be deeper.

first movie I've seen in a while that makes me want to see it over an over again. Hollywood, keep giving Lord and Miller work, cuz those guys know what the fuck they're doing. just give them a project and a budget and leave them to it.

Only just got around to seeing this. Was blown away, honestly. Aside from a few nitpicks about the choppy animation (I know why they did it, and mostly it worked out, but some of the time it imo. didn't), and how all the spider-people except fat-616 Peter seemed redundant, it was amazing. Would call it the best movie I've seen in years.
